  Xedium3d - Tutorials - HDRI
HDRI images are called High Dynamic Range Images because they have a high-range that can simulate different amounts of light.
HDRI images can have a much higher range since it stores values differently.
The main format of HDRI images are Radiance *.hdr files.

 METINSEVEN.COM - HDRI-Studio
As you can see the differently colored softbox lights in the HDRI provide a varied lighting and reflection result, with nice, tinted soft shadows being cast from the objects in the scene, while the HDRI intensity is not even at full strength and the renderer's settings are not optimal.
The Neutral HDRIs provide a balanced monotone lighting, the Gels are there to add some moody color variation to your lighting and the Abstract ones are useful for graphic effects in your lighting and reflections.
Each HDRI is available in the widely supported.hdr format and you can select several different resolutions for different applications, ranging from large-scale environment lighting to detailed close-ups.

Hyperfocal Design - HDRI in Lightwave
If you are not up to speed on HDRI or the lingo, you may wish to first read our Understanding HDRI article.
One HDRI: Use one HDRI for both your background image and for your lighting, either mapping to a 3d inverted sphere or as a lightprobe environment.
Then use another HDRI mapped to another inverted sphere which will provide lighting to the scene but will not be visible in the render.

 backgrounds and hdri
since hdri is not only usefull for lighting we have to know how to use it for backdrops and reflection (refraction too).
the resolution of a hdri is compared to high res background images poor so it's often not possible to use it for the background.
i adjust the brightness of the hdri too and for this example i raise it up to 350% because the enviroment is pretty dark.

 Stitched HDRI
This is a first attempt using fully automatic Gradient Domain High Dynamic Range Compression to compress the bightness range of the HDRI to the range of a computer monitor.
I found that in the time it took me to take the pictures (about 50 minutes for 320 photos) the light changed significantly, the resulting HDRI is still smooth and looks very good but it is not a "snapshot" in time of the lighting conditions.
Of course the whole process could be streamlined significantly by trading off some of the resolution for fewer pictures with a wide angle lens (not every application requires an 18,000 pixel wide pano) and I could have shot brackets that were further apart reducing the overall number of images.

This is due to the fact that the correct lighting, highlights, contact shadows and reflections are contained in the HDRI photographs captured on-set during the live action shoot.
The HDRI data can now be used in 3D to recreate the exact same lighting conditions that was present in the 'real world' at a specific moment in time.
A HDRI photograph is unique in the fact that it stores both colour and intensity values of the environment, as the image integrates numerous exposures (camera stops) of the environment in one file at an extraordinary high colour depth and image resolution.

 HDRI - CGAFaq
Typically each HDRI pixel component is represented as a floating-point value corresponding to some physical measure of the energy in that pixel.
HDRIs can be synthesized from real-world scenes by combining multiple photographs of the same subject taken at different exposures.
Since HDRIs are a better model of reality, renderers that use HDRIs as the source images for environment or texture maps can generate more realistic images.

 HDRI
The entire HDRI term has been misunderstood, and despite the fact this feature had been incorporated since back in Lightwave 6.0, it is still surrounded in mystery.
While there are some good documentation on HDR images, Lightwave users find it hard to apply to Lightwave itself as there does not appear to be much documentation as of yet to help even the experienced user get through it.
This is because HDRI incorporates quite a few principles, and the more that one knows how things are being operated, the better the tweaking and resulting work will be.

In the HDRI Image Settings dialog box, you will have access to parameters such as exposure control, clamping and to internal storage settings.
Since HDRI images contains color values in quite a wide range (not just in 0..1 or 0..255) you need to specify which part you are interested in if you decide to use Linear internal storage.
After the setup of the HDRI map, the Output values of the texmap (bitmap texture, for example) must be adjusted to reflect the white point that was defined in the HDRI Image Settings Dialog.

HDRI stands for high dynamic range image - sometimes refered to as a radiance map.
HDR images have the important property that their pixel values are proportional to the amount of light in the original environment where the HDRI was captured.
In the HDRI scene you can see how the strength of the reflections is nicely adapted depending on the reflective properties of each ball.

A more extreme example would involve using it to pull a manageable image out of a completely unruly HDRI map, as in some cases these images appear to only contain data in areas showing windows or light sources, when they in fact are hiding entire data in the dark areas.
In this case, adjusting the range of the HDRI map to something that is easier to see without further tweaking may be in order.
You can also choose to use HDRI as the global light source, and place item lights in order to generate a more specific lighting direction, generate caustics, or provide different shadows than those which are based entirely on your maps.

HDRI is something that I have started to get more and more questions about in terms of what it really is and how it is used.
In contrast to that you've got the HDR images which have the important property that their pixel values are proportional to the amount of light at any given pixel.
In this [fig 2.4] image a HDR image has been placed on a plane in the scene, these types of white planes are commonly used in scenes with reflective areas and might be configured to look like a 'standard' light reflector, window or door openings.

But the render is still a bit slow and noisy due to the contrast of the HDRi map used for the skylight.
Because diffuse lighting is a far less precise thing than reflections, and because the contrast in some HDRI maps can confuse the lighting, wasting time, we can 'blur' the HDR image a little in order to get a faster and cleaner render.
Note at last the HDRi reflection of the window on the ring: it's all blown up; then note in the middle the windows reflection laying on the table reflected on the ring: you start seeing the trees out of the window, more visible in the third reflection that is on the table.

In this half, my goal is to show you how to easily use hdri image that you just made (assuming you just completed part 1 of the hdri tut) in a 3d scene using 3dsmax, the Splutterfish HDRI loading plugin (for older versions of Max) and Brazil/Rio.
it is also possible to use the hdri for correct reflections (so that bright spots won't be clamped on objects that aren't very reflective and so that bright areas will be blown out on very reflective objects).
First off, our hdri is currentlt set to be screen mapped, but its a panorama, so it should really wrap all the way around our scene, so in the material editor, under the 'coordinates' rollout, be sure 'environment' is checked and select 'spherical environment' from the dropdown list nest to it.

If this were to be done with an external building shot, the surrounding HDRI would be able to provide not only a convincing approximation to natural daylight conditions, but also include the surrounding environment reflections.
HDRI images can be created through the use of either a light probe, or a digital camera in combination with either a silver ball or a fish-eye lens.
Several third party software tools currently exist to allow HDRIs to be created from multiple photographs taken at different light exposure levels, and as interest in, and knowledge of, high dynamic range image formats and their usefulness grows, it is likely that more and more such tools will appear in the market.

Since all the data in HDR images can't be displayed on a monitor, HDRI apps usually have a tonemapping feature, which averages the light/colour in the HDR image.
This is really handy as you don't have to edit the HDRI before using it, when you raise the gamma you might want to lower the luminosity brightness slider a little, or lower the brighness/lightness in the layer/effects.

In computer graphics and cinematography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI for short) is a set of techniques that allow a far greater dynamic range of exposures than normal digital imaging techniques.
For passes where clipping can be a problem (mostly with particles, effects, or volumetrics that get too bright when they add up in the same place), you can bring the brightness down on any overexposed area, and you'll see detail appear that would have been clipped if you rendered at 8-bit or 16-bit.

This is because a sharp un-blurred HDRI used for lighting can often cause your render to look dirty and poorly sampled, while a blurry one can improve this greatly without changing the lighting of your scene at all.
Not only that, but a blurry HDRI can actually speed up the rendering process, because there are less fine-details in the HDRI to be processed which make no difference to the lighting of your scene anyway.
The Reflections HDRI is of course the one to use for your object’s Reflections channel.
