	Student HECS debts rise to erode tax cuts
		The Department of Education’s higher education funding branch assistant secretary, Mr Bill Mutton, told the Senate’s education estimates committee that the increase in HECS debts caused by indexation to CPI in 2000-01 would be 5.4 per cent.
		The 5.4 per cent increase is understood to be three times the level of the annual inflation charge on HECS debts in previous years.
		For someone with a $20,000 debt from a four-year agricultural science degree, the 5.4 per cent rise would mean an extra $1,080 in debt after the indexation is applied, or more than $20.77 a week over one year.
