  Human Genome Project (HGP)
HGP is one of several international genome projects aimed at sequencing the DNA of a specific organism.
Another goal of the HGP was to develop faster, more efficient methods for DNA sequencing and sequence analysis and the transfer of these technologies to industry.
The sequencing of the human genome was made possible, in part by the development of a new technology, termed Rolling Circle Amplification Technology, that amplified the number of copies of DNA in the samples being sequenced, thereby facilitating the analysis.

But HGP scientists funded through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well as some private-sector researchers, have urged policy makers to resist the temptation to use Celera's announcement as a reason to curtail spending on federal sequencing, in part because they find fault with Celera's science.
HGP scientists anticipate, however, that technological advances could reduce future costs for mapping and sequencing the genome to as little as $750 million.
The private ventures were announced as the HGP was in the midst of a comprehensive revision of its five-year plan.

Human Genome Project (HGP) fact file
The HGP began in the United States in 1990, when the National Institute of Health and the Department of Energy joined forces with international partners to decipher the massive amount of information contained in our genomes.
It is also believed that the HGP will give us insight into the fundamental mechanisms of life and lead to an era of molecular medicine, with precise new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease.
Genomics is the study of all the DNA — or genome — of an organism.

Because HGP does not rely on cyanide, it is not burdened with the chemical costs of detoxifying effluent cyanide solutions.
In addition to reduced environmentally-based expenses, HGP processing does not require very fine grinding, vigorous agitation, or aeration, thereby eliminating the need for some of the costly capital equipment (such as ball mills) that must be used with conventional operations.
HGP is also uniquely economical in that it will not extract the silver which often accompanies gold in ores.

The HGP and the SNPs research will provide thousands of extra "doorways" or destinations for new medicines and drugs to work on.
Apart from new drugs, the HGP research is pointing to a vastly increased knowledge of how the human body works - with better explanations now available for a range of conditions or biological responses.
One small example is that the mystery of bitter taste has been solved - a new family of proteins (which come from genes) that control this response have been found in taste buds.

Progress in the HGP itself, together with scientific contributions from the many HGP spinoffs in both the public and private sector, will enable us to include new program goals that could not have been anticipated only a few years ago.
However, at the same time, it is important that we work to guarantee that HGP data acquired with public funds continue to be made available to the scientific community at large and that the data is of a quality that provides the greatest scientific information and utility.
The scientific community involved in the HGP is truly on the cutting edge of technology development and scientific discovery; and as a result, surprising new discoveries and advances can be expected over the next few years.

National Human Genome Research Institute - About The Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project (HGP) was one of the great feats of exploration in history, an inward voyage of discovery rather than an outward exploration of the planet or the cosmos.
Indeed, a large part of the early work of the HGP was devoted to the development of improved technologies for accelerating the elucidation of the genome.
The overarching mission of the HGP and the NHGRI, however, remains the same: the quest to understand the human genome and the role it plays in both health and disease.

With its deliberate commitment to identify the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of its own scientific progress, the HGP is a powerfully illuminating model for how to promote public understanding of science and technology suited to a new style of policy making by a participating citizenry.
The focus of the all-day Symposium was to lay a foundation for exploring substantive approaches and strategies for stimulating public dialogue that produces relevant data about public values and stimulates widespread enhancement of citizen responsibility for the policy choices associated with HGP-related interventions.
Several of the panelists emphasized the critical aspect of "education" as central to the process of achieving "scientific literacy," inferring that a basic understanding of the HGP by the public would be required for meaningful participation in any policy-making decision regarding its application.
