  HGV
Both GBV-C and HGV are positive, single-stranded RNA viruses containing approximately 9400 nucleotides, have a genomic organization resembling that of the Flaviviridae, and are distantly related to HCV.
HGV infection was originally suggested to be connected with fulminant hepatitis, but recent studies have failed to prove a connection between HGV and clinical illness.
The clinical significance of HGV infection and HGV-HCV co-infection remains to be fully elucidated, but at present does not seem to be a major disease-causing factor.

 Hepatitis G
HGV was 85.5% identical in nucleotide sequence and 100% identical in amino acid sequence to the corresponding portion of GB-C that has been characterized.
HGV RNA was detected in 4 of 45 patients with acute non-A-E hepatitis (9%), 23 of 116 with hepatitis C (20%), 25 of 100 with hepatitis A (25%) and 32 of 100 with hepatitis B (32%).
The prevalence of HGV in patients with hepatitis B was significantly higher than those with hepatitis C or hepatitis non-A-E. The clinical characteristics of the acute illness were similar in patients with HGV alone and those infected with the other viruses with or without HGV.

First Reports About Hepatitis G Virus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
HGV was reported to be a RNA virus in the Flaviviradae family distinct from hepatitis C and other known viruses.
HGV was also identified in 14% of blood transfusion recipients with minor ALT elevations that did not meet criteria for hepatitis and in 8% of those diagnosed with hepatitis C virus infection.
However, with HGV incidence apparently greater than that of hepatitis C and conventional alpha-interferon treatments apparently lacking a high degree of efficacy, there appears to be potential for commercial development of drugs and vaccines for treatment and prevention of HGV-infection.

HepNet - Hepatitis G Conference Update
HGV was recently discovered by Genelabs scientists in collaboration with researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) as part of a program to identify human pathogens responsible for causing non A - E hepatitis.
HGV is a novel RNA virus belonging to the Flaviviradae family and is distantly related to Hepatitis C, another hepatitis virus.
The HGV organization is similar to that of the viruses in the Flaviviridae family with putative structural regions at the 5'-end and non-structural regions at the 3'-end.

ACRIA Update Summer 2002: Hepatitis G: The Nice Virus?
The hepatitis G virus (HGV, also known as GB virus C) is commonly found in people co-infected with HIV and hepatitis C. HGV, first identified in 1995, is a blood-borne virus that doesn't seem to cause liver disease or have any effect on hepatitis C, although its long-term effects are unknown.
HGV infection did not affect the CD4, CXCR4 or CCR5 receptors that HIV uses to enter a cell, so the authors of the study conclude that HGV interferes with HIV replication at some point after entry into the cell.
The authors suggest that HGV may interfere with the classic shift from a Th1 to Th2 pattern that is seen in many people with disease progression.

HGV and Implications for Blood Safety Policies in Canada - Viral Hepatitis and Emerging Bloodborne Pathogens in Canada ...
It appears that immunoglobulin given intravenously transmits HGV infrequently, if at all, and that lack of transmission is explained either by the partitioning of the virus into other plasma fractions during manufacture, the presence of HGV neutralizing antibody in immunoglobulin preparations, the effectiveness of viral inactivation techniques, or a combination of these factors.
HGV infection has not been associated with any adverse effects on graft or patient survival in patients undergoing liver transplantation; similar results have been obtained in renal and heart transplantation.
HGV is common in blood donors (1% to 4% positive for HGV RNA) and in the general population.

An HGV launched by a Minuteman would have a range of 15,000 km; air-launched from a B-1 or B-52, a 7,400 km range.
Reports as late as 1992 indicated the tests may have occurred under the Have Space project, with the air-launched version referred to as the HGV and the ground-launched version as the Strategic Boost Glide Vehicle.
The HGV was carried to 20000 m (68000 ft) under the wing of a modified B-52H, and after release a large rocket booster accelerated the missile to Mach 18.

Clinical symptoms of disease, dual infection and triple infection were not visible in 1/3 of patients.

Active HGV infection mostly occurred in the youngest age groups of patients, in the concrete mostly in age group of 20-24 years old patients, mostly in dual infection with HCV and the most often suggested way of transmission was again i.v.

The observed amount of HGV RNA in the liver may be explained by contamination from serum, since the estimated volume of serum required to produce the results is approximately 0.1 microl.
We postulated, however, that patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) might have a low tolerance for HGV infection, as noted in the case of HGV's distant relative, HCV, (4) or that there might be interference between the two viruses, as noted in the case of HCV and hepatitis D virus.
In this group of patients with hemophilia, prevalence rates for HGV viremia were 13 percent in the 15 HCV-negative patients, 8 percent in the 12 patients with hepatic failure, and 9 percent in the 54 matched controls.

High Prevalence of Hepatitis G Virus in Bone Marrow Transplant Recipients and Patients Treated for Acute Leukemia -- ...
The prevalence of HGV in a group of multitransfused patients with hematological malignancy was studied using a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction technique.
HGV infection appears to be extremely common in these patients; however, the clinical significance of these findings with respect to liver dysfunction is not yet clear.
Given the high rate of HGV positivity in multitransfused hematology patients, the possibility that it may cause chronic liver disease as is evident for HCV is clearly of great concern, and the need for further studies to establish the natural history of this virus is urgent.
