  New HHMI program challenges research scientists to 'break the mold' in undergraduate science education
HHMI announced that it plans to award $1 million each to 20 research scientists on the basis of their plans to transmit the excitement and values of scientific research to undergraduate education.
HHMI has invited 84 research universities to nominate tenured faculty members to compete for the grants, which it will award in the fall of 2002.
HHMI has kept the guidelines for the new awards flexible, to encourage applicants to be as creative as possible.

HHMI Interdisciplinary Scholars participate in the Summer Research Poster Session, held in September, which provides an opportunity for Scholars to present their research to an audience of students and faculty.
An HHMI Interdisciplinary Science Scholar must show continuing evidence of his or her commitment by progress towards the completion of course requirements, and continued active involvement in research.
Of the 93 HHMI Scholars graduating from 1990-2001, 38 have entered medical school, 30 have gone on to graduate school, 13 have entered MD-PhD programs, and two have attended vet school, and three are laboratory research associates or working as scientists in industry.

Primary criteria for the evaluation of proposals are the feasibility of the study, clarity of the proposal, the academic preparation of the student, and the impact of the proposed research on the applicant's career development.
HHMI Undergraduate Research Fellows are strongly encouraged, though not required, to participate in a departmental Honors program.

UCSF is one of 41 medical schools which will receive a total of $92 million from HHMI, which announced the awards yesterday (Dec. 15).

So the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is awarding $17.5 million to 42 outstanding scientists in 20 countries to tackle the mysteries of the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying infectious and parasitic disease.
