As a white student in HISD in 2004, you were more likely to pass that test (86 percent of the whites had passing grades on all five parts of the test) than Hispanics (54 percent) and African-Americans (57 percent).
HISD states in a report that its focus is to "serve the top 5 percent of each campus with a differentiated curriculum." Yet, there are many schools in HISD with 10 to 70 percent of students classified as gifted and talented.

The new school finance law passed by the state legislature earlier this year was advertised as having a property tax cut for homeowners.
If HISD approves the budget, and later this year approves the four cent increase that will be required, it'll mean an additional $43.5 million including the extra money from the state.

The number of HISD schools that received the highest rating in the state's accountability system increased this year, while the number of low-performing schools declined slightly, according to Texas Education Agency figures released Monday.

On the contract issue, Houston Independent School District trustees authorized the administration to negotiate a final contract with The Varnett School, where HISD students could be placed before Oct. 1.
District officials say the lack of space in HISD has made it necessary to use private facilities to house students capped out of their neighborhood school.

Houston ISD (HISD) officially threw its hat into the performance pay ring January 12 when its board unanimously approved a plan that could net teachers as much as $3,000 more per year based on how well their students perform on state and national standardized tests.
With 210,000 students, HISD is the largest school district in the country to adopt a performance pay plan.
HISD’s performance pay plan goes into effect immediately, with the first bonuses awarded to teachers after this year’s performance results are in, probably sometime this fall.

In the report released Monday from HISD's Professional Standards Department, Associate Principal Marmion Dambrino said that in March, Assistant Principal Robert Kimball ordered the shredding of 122 boxes that may have contained the data needed to determine whether students were dropouts.
District officials have said their problem mostly is one of careless recordkeeping and that the nearly 3,000 undercounted potential dropouts uncovered by TEA are shameful but not surprising for a district with 212,000 students.

In response to increasing requests for expansion of this type of program, HISD is introducing the first all-Montessori school for students in prekindergarten through eighth grade.
HISD has some Montessori classes at three elementary schools now, and there has been a waiting list of parents wanting to get their children into Montessori programs when space becomes available.
HISD will now extend this program to 550 children at Wilson Elementary School under an agreement with the Friends of Montessori, a nonprofit organization made up of parents and educators in support of Montessori methods in public schools.
