  HIV testing
When a person already knows that she or he is infected with HIV, they may also have a viral load test to detect HIV genetic material and estimate the level of virus in the blood.
HIV can be passed on to another person during the window period even though an HIV test will not show that you are infected with HIV.
This type of testing is not generally recommended because of the lack of emotional support for the person, and a positive result must be confirmed by further testing at a clinic.

Clinical studies have shown that the approved HIV test system is able to correctly identify 100% of known positive blood samples, and 99.5% of HIV-1 negative blood samples.
In addition, manufacturer's tests on the approved HIV test system have been carefully reviewed by the FDA to assure that the tests conducted were themselves adequate to demonstrate that the system is capable of yielding accurate, dependable results.
In addition to blood tests, there is a test that uses oral fluid, collected from between the cheek and gum of the mouth, and a urine test.

HIV & AIDS - How Accurate is the HIV Test?
The ELISA test, first developed in 1985, is highly sensitive and also extremely nonspecific, which means it gives a positive result even when there is no HIV present.
As many as four out of five ELISA tests cannot be confirmed by Western Blot, (4) and yet it remains the most widely used test in the Third World, most notably Africa, where HIV is said to be rampant.
The test's greatest failing in the eyes of those who've had to rely on it, however, is that it is not standardized.

The HIV ELISA is a screening testĀ for the diagnosis of HIV infection.
If this test is positive, it must be confirmed with a second test called the Western Blot, which is more specific and will confirm if someone is truly HIV positive (there are other conditions that may inaccurately produce a positive ELISA test result, including lupus, Lyme disease, and syphilis).
Negative tests do not necessarily rule out HIV infection, because there is an interval (called the "window period") between HIV infection and the appearance of measurable anti-HIV antibodies.
