 Encyclopedia: HIV positive people
HIV positive people are often discriminated against on the basis of testing positive, on the one hand because of (often irrational) fears of infection, on the other hand because the infection is often seen as a consequence of promiscuity, homosexuality or drug addiction.
HIV positive people are people who have the human immunodeficiency virus HIV, the agent of the currently incurable disease AIDS.
In these groups the term most often applied to people who are HIV positive is, "People Living With HIV/AIDS." This is often abbreviated as "PLWHA," "PLWA" or even "PLA." Recently "People Living Positively" has been also used.

 Learning you are HIV positive
Remember, being HIV positive does not stop you from being the person you were before you knew your test result.
Just as your HIV positive result was possibly a big event to happen in your life, if you're in a relationship the news will also have an impact on your partner.
If both partners are HIV positive, sexual intercourse without a condom can still be risky.

MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: HIV ELISA/western blot
If this test is positive, it must be confirmed with a second test called the Western Blot which is more specific and will confirm if someone is truly HIV positive (there are other conditions that may inaccurately produce a positive ELISA test result, including lupus, lyme disease, and syphilis).
A positive result does not necessarily mean that the subject has HIV infection as there are certain conditions that may lead to a false positive result (such as Lyme disease, syphilis, and lupus).
A positive western blot is generally regarded as conclusive for an HIV infection.

HIV positive children may ask their parents or guardians difficult questions about why they have to take medicine, why they see a doctor so often or why they sometimes get sick.

HIV - Positive Employees are Protected by Law
As a matter of fact, a very significant number of people that are HIV positive (which means that the individual has been exposed to the virus and is potentially at risk for developing AIDS or ARC) will not develop AIDS or ARC.
If, in fact, one of our employees is HIV positive, there is the possibility, but not the probability, that he/she may develop the AIDS related complex also known as ARC.
The important point here is that although someone is HIV positive, more than likely they can still perform the essential functions of their job.

Exercise Enhances Lives of HIV-Positive Patients
Moderate aerobic exercise can be beneficial to HIV-positive patients because it enhances mood and quality of life, helps maintain lean body mass when wasting is a problem, and can lessen some side effects of HIV medications.
Andrew Zopola, MD, director of Stanford University's Positive Care program, tells WebMD, "We recommend that our patients work with a personal trainer as part of their comprehensive care.
He cites evidence confirming that regular, moderate-intensity "breathless" aerobic exercise is at the very least not detrimental to the HIV patient's immune system.

HIV & AIDS - The HIV Tests
Eleopulos and colleagues examine both HIV antibody tests: the enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test, the first test used to screen blood, which costs about $50, and the Western Blot (WB) which is used to confirm a positive result on the ELISA, and costs closer to $100.
In other words, those 80 people, had they not been a part of this particular, scrupulous study, would have been told they were HIV positive, since a single positive WB is all that is required, but in fact they were negative.
There were 4000 people who had two positive ELISAs followed by a negative WB (note: all of those 4000 would be called HIV positive in Africa and HIV negative in the West).

 HIV and AIDS
As with all other kinds of virus, HIV does not have an individual metabolism and, therefore, has to attack other living cells and use their metabolism to make copies of itself.
It is a condition that sets in when the HIV virus has killed so many T-helper cells that the immune system is no longer able to recognise and react to attacks from everyday infections.
Unfortunately, HIV is a very efficient virus that can change some of its own characteristics, mutate and create new HIV variants, which are resistant to the medicines used in treatment.
