HJR Murray, the son of the JAH Murray who compiled the original Oxford English Dictionary, was one of those incredible Victorian scholars who were fluent in twelve languages, only three of them living.
In the English version, which Murray thinks is the oldest, it is a section entitled "Antonius the Emperor." The King is the soul, the opposing King is the Devil, and the Knight is the Christian.
Murray describes this version as "a hopeless muddle" by the translator, who was apparently working from three or more sources and knew very little about chess.

Background Essay no. 82 | Endgame? The Legality of Chess in Islam | AskAsia.org
According to HJR Murray, "most probably the Prophet had never heard of the existence of chess, since the Muhammadan jurists have been unable to settle the question of the legality of chess-playing by any direct decision of Muhammad as recorded in the Qur'an, or in authentic tradition.
(HJR Murray 187.)" It is difficult to state with any great certainty that chess was played in Arabia during the Prophet's lifetime; chess was after all an Indo-Iranian invention, and it is not unreasonable to assume that it entered Arabian culture through the conquest of Egypt and Western Asia after the Prophet's death.
However, it is clear that chess had gained tremendous popularity amongst all classes and social spheres by the time of the Abbasid Caliphate, which took power in the year 750, still very early in Islamic history.

Philip Murray, the SWOC president, defended the slow pace of the drive by placing the organizational work of the union in perspective.

I believe at > some point Murray or Gollon (can't remember which) played the game with > drops and discovered that it made no sense (most of the pieces simply don't > come into play).
Gollon's error seems to have come directly from HJR Murray's fabulous but slightly flawed (in respect of Chu anyway), A History of Chess.

 Tafl -- Brief Reconstruction
The "standard reconstruction" of the game derives from the work of HJR Murray, as described in his History of Chess and History of Board Games Other Than Chess.
This variant is almost identical to Murray's version, except that the King must get to the corner of the board, instead of the edge.
The Murray reconstruction doesn't quite work (although it is a lot of fun anyway), so it is still worth experimenting, to figure out how the game really was played in period.

The Rules of The Royal Game of Ur from Masters Games
This follows the HJR Murray route but shortens it so that pieces are borne from the same square as RC Bell.
When a counter reaches the penultimate square in that row it turns again going to the opposite row to that which it started and then travels around the outside of the 2 x 3 rectangle before bearing off into the gap from which it started but from the opposite side.
Both this and Murray's version have the elegant result that a rosette is encountered every 4 squares.

 Channel 4 – Time Team
The game remained a mystery until the British chess historian HJR Murray connected a description of the Saami game tablut – in the diary of Swedish botanist Carl von Linn – [ie Linnaeus] from his trip to Lapland in 1732 – with the descriptions of hnefatafl in the sagas.
Murray's hypothesis, that the Saami game of tablut was identical to hnefatafl, was put forward in his book History of Chess in 1913.
From the material that Murray collected, we learn that tafl was known not only in Scandinavia, but also in other regions that were under the influence of the Vikings: Ireland, Wales, England and Lapland.
