UMP was the MP5 replacement, the MP7 was more the competition for the P90 with the cartridge type.
Only difference is, HK hasn't applied the cartridge to anything else (as far as I've heard) and hasn't been around that long.
Cheaper SMG indeed, but H&K already stated that they are marketing it as a replacement for the MP5 as it comes in.45,.40 and 9mm besides all the inherent better qualities about the system.

The development of UCP has been started on request from Bundeswehr (German Armed forces) in 2002 or 2003, and this pistol is intended to become a companion to HK MP7 Personal Defence Weapon, which is also is under serious consideration for Bundeswehr, as well as some counter-terrorism forces in Germany and abroad.
Current prototypes feature a HK P2000-type grip with detachable backstraps of different size and configurations, and a Picatinny-type accessory rail under the barrel.
The action of the gun is said to use some sort of retarded (or delayed) blowback system, but so far it is not known, if it is a roller-delayed blowback, as in HK P9s pistol, or a gas-delayed blowback, as in HK P7 pistol.

Going to secondary usually is done in an "oh ****" situation, and the bigger and heavier the sidearm, the slower to bring to bear.
Some of you are confusing the MP7 submachine gun with the P7 pistol.
My understanding from the original poster was that the MP7 is the primary weapon and the P7 is the secondary.

Last you can go ahead and say that both are an SMG and the comaprison would have to be done by using the weapons personally, I don't know anyone that would go into battle with an untested weapon that would be suicide.
MP7: significantly lighter and more compact when the butt and foregrip are folded away, so you can wear it in a holster - but the necessity to unfold things to stand any chance of hitting anything makes it slower to get into use.
In conclusion, I would rate the MP7 as being more suitable when you really don't expect its users to have to use it much, as it's less trouble to carry, but the P90 as being better if they're likely to have to use it.

Hk is a great company and I am very familiar with their products.
The reason HK sometimes shies away from civie sales is because of all the hoops and hurdles to jump over...and the very small market.
I think guns like the MP7, MP5K, BXP, and MACs and TMP still have a place because they're small enough to be easily concealed by someone like a bodyguard, and small enough to go into a holster and be used as a PDW.

The examples of normal calibre are less dubious in their wound ballistics than the smaller calibres, although a 9 mm AP bullet is very likely to have less wounding capability than soft lead or even non-military hollowpoint bullets of the same calibre do.
The use of a (in comparison to FN’s and HK’s bullets) heavy 5.56mm bullet that’s compatible or identical to 5.56 x 45 mm weapons (kind of M193) is both pro and contra argument.
