Health Level 7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded in 1987 to produce a standard for hospital information systems, HL7 is currently the selected standard for the interfacing of clinical data in most institutions[1].
HL7 and its members are dedicated to providing a comprehensive framework (and related standards) for the exchange, integration, sharing and retrieval of electronic health information.
The HL7 Version 3 development methodology is a continuously evolving process that seeks to develop specifications that facilitate interoperability between healthcare systems.

HL7 Version 3 is a complete rewrite of HL7 to make it XML compliant.
The first field of each HL7 Segment is a simple string of ASCII letters and numbers that identifies the segment.
When parsing an HL7 Message, it is very important to allow for each character to be defined by the MSH segment.

HL7 Clinical Document Architecture, Release 2.0
The HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) is a document markup standard that specifies the structure and semantics of "clinical documents" for the purpose of exchange.
HL7 messages that carry CDA documents (such as the MDM messages in HL7 V2.x and the HL7 V3 Medical Records messages) convey critical contextual information that ensures accurate viewing of clinical data.
HL7 defines both an abstract data type specification, which is the definitive reference, and an XML-specific data type representation.

 HL7 (Health Level 7) - iNTERFACEWARE Inc.
Formed in the United States in 1987, HL7 has the goal of developing an international set of open standards for data format and content that allows different health information systems to easily and effectively communicate with one another.
The HL7 protocol was developed by the Health Level 7 Organization, which consists of grammar and vocabulary that is standardized so that clinical data can be shared amongst all healthcare systems, and easily understood by all.
HL7 messages may not be constructed properly, and they tend to lack specific segments, lack required fields, or even contain unexpected segments.

HL7 3.0 represents a significant technical departure and will be treated specifically in a separate article.
HL7 has made a reasonable attempt to insure that data elements do not overlap in segment definitions, so the organization of data elements into message segments is analogous to a set of tables in a relational database.
