The Tamar Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team battled through heavy surf and potentially-explosive fumes in atrocious weather to reach the MV Willy in Cawsand Bay near Plymouth.
In his citation, Coastguard Sector Manager for South East Cornwall Gerry Wood said: “It is entirely due to the Tamar Coastguards’ fine efforts and in the best traditions of HM Coastguard that no loss of life occurred.”

Friday 1st March: HM Coastguard requested the launch of the Lifeboat at 16.19 to transport a 3 year old child and its mother from the Isle of Muck to the mainland for emergency medical treatment.
HM Coastguard reported to Lifeboat, which was on exercise at the time, that the 9 metre motor sailer Green Flash was making water at the north end of the Island of Muck.
HM Coastguard requested launch of Lifeboat at 11.20 to go to the assistance of the Sulveig, an 8 metre craft which had run aground in Morar River Estuary.

Parents and their children are being warned by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to be Sea Smart this summer as worrying new statistics show that the numbers of potentially life threatening incidents on the UK's coastline are rising.
HM Coastguard statistics for 2002 reveal that over 13,000 incidents were reported to the Coastguard - an increase of over 800 since 2001.1 Part of this increase is due to the Coastguard's new responsibilities in inland waterways but John Astbury, Chief Coastguard, also attributes it to the growing number of visitors to the coast.
Tragically, HM Coastguard statistics for 2002 reveal that there were over 320 lives lost - an increase of over 40 fatalities since 2001.
