In 1997 the prison became the reception prison for all male prisoners in Victoria.
It is situated 136 km to the north of Melbourne, 2.5 km from the Maldon township.
History: In November 1963 a group of prisoners and prison officers from Morwell River Prison (closed in 1997) established a temporary camp at Won Wron to build a new prison farm.
