HMAS ADELAIDE (FFG-01) is a long-range escort frigate with roles including area air defence, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance, and interdiction.
ADELAIDE is equipped with a number of sensors that include long range radars for air and surface surveillance, electronic warfare and optical surveillance systems, a medium range sonar and a command and control system, that can incorporate target data received by data link from other ships and aircraft.
ADELAIDE has a capacity for two S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopters and is fitted with two sets of Mk 32 triple torpedo tubes to provide a counter to submarines.

The last of Australia's DDG's HMAS BRISBANE (DDG-41) was decommissioned in October 2001, ending the age of steam for the Royal Australian Navy.
HMAS PERTH (DDG-38) decommissioned in October 1999 and was sunk in King George Sound, Albany Western Australia in November 2001 as a dive site.
HMAS HOBART (DDG-39) decomissioned in 2000 and was sunk as a dive site in Yankalilla Bay off the southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide, in South Australia on 5 November 2002.

After the loss of the destroyer HMAS Voyager in a collision with the carrier Melbourne in 1964 it was decided to build a further two vesslels to a slightly different design, essentially the UK Leander type.
The HMAS Manoora and HMAS Kanimbla were originally built for the United States Navy as Newport News class LST's and acquired by the Royal Australian Navy in 1994.
She is the largest ship built in Australia for the RAN and also the largest ever built in the port of Sydney.

Australia is upgrading the four remaining Perry Class FFGs with a 8-cell Mk 41 VLS for ESSMs in front of the Mk 13 AAW missile launcher, along with the latest updates of their sensors.
America is starting the LCS programme to replace the Perry class FFGs, up to 60 are exxpected to be built.

In 1983 after a long absence from model building, I decided, as a real challenge, to construct a radio controlled model of one of the newest ships of the Royal Australian Navy.
The model originally started out as HMAS DARWIN, FFG-04, but during construction was altered to HMAS ADELAIDE.
Construction began with a plank on frame hull of ply and balsa and then finished off with fibreglass chopped strand matt and resin.

Additional issues with the upgrade of four Adelaide-class guided missile frigates (FFG) for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) have pushed the programme further back and caused the delay of sea trials planned for the first completed ship, HMAS Sydney.
Complicating the issue is the recent discovery of hull cracking in several of the FFGs.
Because of the implications for sea worthiness, sea trials with HMAS Sydney cannot commence until repairs are made.

Despite contract signature taking place more than six years ago, the FFG Upgrade (Project Sea 1390) is still more than 30 months behind schedule due to continuing problems experienced by ADI in integrating elements of the Australian Distributed Architecture Combat System with other combat system-related, undersea and fire-control software.
The FFG Upgrade is the most ambitious of its type attempted by any FFG (Oliver Hazard Perry class) user.

Served aboard HMAS Adelaide during and after Gulf War 1990.
It was airborne at the time of the ship's engine fire and could not recover to the ship until the Flight Deck had been cleared of debris ejected through the funnel during the initial explosion in the ship's engine unit.
An engine change was performed whilst alongside in Bahrain, and the aircraft passed the subsequent check test flight first time.
