 Encyclopedia: HMAS Albatross
HMAS Albatross was a seaplane tender laid down by the Cockatoo Docks and Engineering Company at Sydney in New South Wales in April 1926, launched on 23 February 1928 by Lady Stonehaven, wife of the Governor General of Australia, completed on 21 December 1928 and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on 23 January 1929.
HMAS Albatross paid off to reserve on 26 April 1933, was accepted by the Admiralty as part payment for the cruiser HMAS Hobart and sailed for England on 11 July 1938.
HMAS Albatross is the Royal Australian Navy's aviation base near Nowra and Jervis Bay on the coast of New South Wales, about 2 hours drive south of Sydney.

The helicopters now based at HMAS Albatross have restored to the RAN much of the anti-submarine capability lost when the Tracker squadron was disbanded in 1983.

The seaplane carrier, HMAS Albatross, remained in commission from January 1929 until April 1933; she embarked Seagull Mark Ill wooden amphibians operated by 101 Flight of the RAAF.
Albatross was designed to launch her aircraft by catapult and to recover them by crane after they alighted on the water.
The heavy cruisers sometimes carried a Seagull Mk 111 while Albatross was in commission and after she was paid-off, they regularly carried one until it was replaced a few years later.

The book is not an official history, rather it is a collection of reminiscences by many of the former Navy personnel who served at HMAS Albatross since its commissioning in 1948, when it was a derelict wartime base with bushes growing through the airstrip.

It was the intention of the Australian Government to equip the RAN with two aircraft carriers but technical advances meant that the second carrier, HMAS MELBOURNE, would require fitting with an angled deck and a steam catapult to accommodate the new generation of aircraft.
She was converted to a troop carrier and ran an almost ferry like service between Australia and Vung Tau for the 7 years of her commitment to the Viet Nam conflict.

KIA from HMAS Sydney when ship lost and sunk with all hands in an action against Japanese forces on 19 November 1941.
Died on 1 March 1942 (Age 27) when HMAS Perth was torpedoed and sunk in the Sundra Strait.
Most of the HMAS Perth survivers were captured and taken to Selarang Gaol and were later transferred to "Bicycle Camp" in Batavia.

The Skyhawk and Tracker squadrons flew from the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne until the time it was decomissioned on 30 June 1982.
The naval base had the unusual distinction of being shared by a small civilian passenger terminal, which at various times was operated by the Masling and later Hazleton airlines companies using small propellor driven aircraft.
Until 2004, the Royal Australian Navy Gliding Association (RANGA) also operated from the runways at Albatross with a small fleet of gliders used by both Navy and civilian members.

The RAN's first ship specifically designed to carry aircraft, HMAS Albatross, was built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard and commissioned in January 1929.
After work-up, the Albatross joined the Fleet but the economic depression saw her paid off into Reserve in 1933, and used as an operating base for sea planes visiting Sydney Harbour.
Albatross left Sydney on 11 July 1933, escorted by a flight of Seagull V amphibians.

The model is a plaster cast of an old wargame model: thought to be an “Authenticast”.
As mentioned earlier I have now made a companion model to Albatross: the Hellenic Prince, the sword made into a ploughshare in 1948.
