Ardent withdrew, firing torpedoes, one of which was seen to pass close ahead of the Scharnhorst.
Ardent made one hit on Scharnhorst with her 4.7-inch guns, but was extensively hit by return fire from the 5.9-inch secondary armament of the battlecruisers, and sank at about 1725.

HMAS Ardent (P 84) was an Attack-class patrol boat laid down by Evans Deakin and Company at Brisbane in Queensland in October 1967, launched on 27 April 1968 and commissioned on 26 October 1968.
Ardent was transferred to the Hobart Port Division of the Royal Australian Navy Reserve on 18 June 1982 and paid off on 6 January 1994.

HMAS Bandolier (16/11/73) and HMAS Archer (21/10/74) were given to Indonesia on the dates shown.
Five boats, HMAS Aitape, HMAS Lae HMAS Madang, HMAS Ladava and HMAS Samarai which were all part of the Papua New Guinea division of the RAN were all given to Papua New Guinea on 14 November 1974, presumably to assist them as they became a new nation the next year.
Today, HMAS Advance is on display at the National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour, Sydney (next to the Pyrmont Bridge) and HMAS Ardent is in Darwin as a memorial.

 D/S Borgund - Norwegian Merchant Fleet 1939-1945
On June 11 Borgund came across the rafts with 38 survivors from the British Glorious and 1 survivor from the destroyer Acasta, which had been one of the escorts for the aircraft carrier Glorious while evacuating British pilots and aircraft from the North of Norway.
The two ships as well as the escort Ardent had had an encounter with the battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau on June 8, all 3 had been sunk.
German air planes showed up while Borgund was searching for survivors, but left her alone; in fact they called for help from shore and another 5 survivors were later found by Norwegian fishing vessels, and 2 by a German sea plane.

Hi Dan, Without actually seeing the pics I would hazard a guess that one of the carriers would almost definitely be HMS Illustrious, as she was the first ship to use the Captain Cook Graving Dock at Garden Island (HMAS Kuttabul).
was the Captain of the DD Ardent or Acasta, was interviewed in the program, sadly he died recently of cancer.
As to RN Ships firing to the last on the Bismarck, well, make up your own minds, I think its something that if true can be 'accepted' now, (there really is nothing we can do about it now), I'm sure there are many other things we cant be proud of in wartime, politics stink.....
