The first HMAS Arunta (D-130) was a Tribal class destroyer laid down by the Cockatoo Docks and Engineering Company Limited at Sydney in New South Wales on 15 November 1939, launched on 30 November 1940, and commissioned on 30 March 1942.
Arunta attacked and sank the enemy Japanese submarine RO-33 off New Guinea on 24 August 1942, and participated in the landings at Lingayen Gulf in January 1945 where she was damaged by enemy Japanese kamikaze aircraft and at Balikpapan in Borneo in July 1945.
HMAS Arunta paid off to reserve on 21 December 1956, was sold for scrap to the China Steel Corporation of Taipei in Formosa on 1 November 1968, and sank under tow 65 miles off the New South Wales coast on 13 February 1969.

HMAS Encounter was a second-class protected cruiser laid down for the Royal Navy by HM Dockyard at Devonport in Plymouth 28 January 1901, launched on 18 June 1902, completed 21 November 1905 and transferred to the Royal Australian Navy 27 July 1915.
HMAS Terrible (R93) was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier laid down by HM Devonport Dockyard at Plymouth in England 19 April 1943, launched 30 September 1944.

HMAS Stuart is also operating off the coast of North Western Australia and is on her way to assist.

During the month of October, ARUNTA was employed on troop escort convoys between Queensland and New Guinea as the Australians gradually pushed the Japanese back over the Kokoda Trail.
At Balikpapan Borneo, ARUNTA participated in the shelling of shore positions from 27th June until the amphibious landing on July 1.
ARUNTA spent an additional four active but peaceful years in the Royal Australian Navy until she was laid up in 1957.

The original HMAS ARUNTA, commissioned in 1942, was the first of Australia’s Tribal Class Destroyers and was the fastest ship ever built for the RAN at that time.
ARUNTA was damaged by Kamikaze aircraft in January 1945 with the loss of two men while supporting landings at Lingayen Gulf, but following temporary repairs the vessel continued to play an active role in the Pacific War.
ARUNTA was active for some years after the war and in 1955 became one of the first RAN ships to join the Commonwealth Strategic Reserve, setting the pattern for RAN and South-East Asian deployments.

Arunta was involved in convoy escort duties between Townsville and Port Moresby and around to Milne Bay.
The Arunta later supported operations forward of Milne Bay, transporting troops of the 2/12th Battalion to Goodenough Island in October 1942, and conducted further convoy escort duties.
In July 1943, Ken was drafted from Arunta and sent to Sydney but on arrival he was promptly put on a troop train that same night bound for Queensland.

Arunta was hit by a 'Zero' kamikaze at 1737 and had to stop for repairs, later to rejoin the fleet at 0100.

The HMAS Arunta served in the Pacific during World War II, with the occupation forces in Japan, in the Korean War and in the Strategic Reserve in the Far East.
HMAS Arunta was subject to a modernisation program at Cockatoo Island Dockyard in the early 1950s.
Some drawings from this program are included in the series, with identification numbers in the same range as the original working drawings; these later drawings are not included in the register to the working drawings, but have been left with the series since they were apparently held there by the dockyard.

Part of this huge force was Task Force 74, composed of ships of the Australian Navy, namely the cruisers HMAS Australia (fondly known as “The Aussie”) and HMAS Shropshire, the destroyer HMAS Arunta and her sister ship HMAS Warramunga.

Originally to be named the Kurnai, HMAS Bataan was laid down on 18 February 1942, launched on 15 January 1944 and completed on 26 June 1945.
HMAS Bataan was laid up in 1954, and sold a few years later.
Some of the drawings were taken from the collection of ‘as fitted’ drawings for the second Tribal class destroyer, HMAS Warramunga.
