At the conclusion of the Royal Australian Navy’s HMAS Sydney II Seminar in November 2001, the Western Australian Maritime Museum sought permission of the Navy to compile and promulgate the many submissions received for the seminar.
Further, while Museum staff were able to assist the Navy in the 2001 Seminar by providing advice, assistance and facilities, the Museum was not able to take a central role in the proceedings, or to finance the promulgation of submissions as it had in earlier times.
While it has since been tasked with a watching brief should either or both HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran be found in Australian waters, the Museum also ceased to field public inquiry about the mystery and the social elements of the tragedy, referring callers to the RAN for advice.
