It was bought by the Commonwealth Government in 1915 from the state of New South Wales so the Federal capital at Canberra would have access to the sea.
Strictly speaking it is a separate territory and is not part of the Australian Capital Territory, but it is treated as part of the ACT for most practical purposes.
Within the Booderee National Park is HMAS Creswell, the Royal Australian Navy College named after Captain William Creswell, the Director of the Commonwealth Naval Forces which later became the RAN.

In the darkness of the early hours of the morning of 9 August 1942 the RAN heavy cruiser HMAS Canberra was severely damaged off Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) in a surprise attack by a powerful Japanese naval force in an action that became known as the Battle of Savo Island.
Canberra was hit 24 times in less than two minutes and 84 of her crew were killed including Captain Frank Getting.
The Canberra as the lead ship of the screening force was the first to be attacked and received the full force of the Japanese barrage.

But not so many years later, in the combat darkness of 09Aug42, the wood and canvas aircraft became torches which lit up their mother ships and made them glowing targets for Japanese cruisers and destroyers.
Astoria, along with USS Quincy (CA-39), USS Vincennes (CA-44) and HMAS Canberra, were all lost in that battle off Savo Island (Solomons).
Frank and many other sailors cried when they heard the news.
