The first HMAS Cessnock (J-175/B-240/A-114) was a Bathurst class corvette laid down by Cockatoo Docks and Engineering at Sydney in New South Wales on 16 April 1941, launched on 17 October 1941 by Lady Gordon, wife of Sir Thomas Gordon, a director of the constructing firm, and commissioned on 26 January 1942.
HMAS Cessnock paid off on 12 July 1946 and sold for scrap to the Nan Chiao Shipping and Salvage Company of Shanghai in China on 23 April 1947.
The second HMAS Cessnock (P-210) is a Fremantle class patrol boat laid down by the North Queensland Engineers and Agents at Cairns in Queensland on 9 March 1981, launched on 15 January 1983 and commissioned on 5 March 1983.

After various name changes (1939, HMAS Penguin IV; 1940, HMAS Brisbane), with the expansion of military events in the Pacific Region, it was commissioned as HMAS Moreton in 1942 and expanded to various depots down river.
HMAS Moreton was the initial point of entry to the RAN for Queenslanders during World War II and became a demobilization centre in 1945.
The Ipswich, with the second crew on board was present in Tokyo Bay during the surrender ceremony on 2nd September 1945, along with others of her minesweeping class, HMAS Ballart, Cessnock and Pirie.

On Saturday 6 November, HMAS Cessnock crew were given civic reception in Cessnock with a street parade along Vincent Street finishing with an official ceremony at the cenotaph on the Cessnock TAFE Campus.
This naval vessel is to be decommissioned in 2005 and this important ceremony represented the last opportunity for the Cessnock community to give recognition to the extensive successful service of the HMAS Cessnock and its crews dating back to World War II.
Cessnock's Hospitality Section has delivered the training component of CHIPS and this event gave students the opportunity to prepare and serve food to industry representatives.

After four days in Cairns CESSNOCK sailed for Mackay where the patrol boat teamed up with IPSWICH and both proceeded to Noumea taking advantage of the "in company" time to achieve many exercise targets.

The latest interceptions occurred west of Gove in the Northern Territory by HMAS Cessnock, after the vessels, carrying a total of 19 crew, were spotted by Coastwatch patrol aircraft well inside the Australian Fishing Zone.
Senator Macdonald said 96 boats had now been apprehended inside the Australian Fishing Zone so far this year, compared with a total of 111 in 2002, many as the result of assistance from the Navy.
"The vessels are being escorted by HMAS Cessnock to Darwin," Senator Macdonald said.

The strength of the Australian Government's integrated approach to protecting Australia's fishing resources has been demonstrated with two Navy vessels and fisheries officers working in tandem in the most recent apprehension of a foreign fishing vessel in Australia's northern waters.
The vessel was apprehended by HMAS Townsville near the Goulburn Islands off Arnhem Land and, after beginning the tow to Darwin Harbour, rendezvoused with HMAS Cessnock who took over the tow, allowing the Townsville to remain on task and continue to patrol Australia's northern waters.
The vessel was initially spotted by Coastwatch aircraft, before fisheries officers and the Navy swooped on the six crew.

John has now been on HMAS Adelaide for eight months and after we left probably wished he was back on HMAS Farncomb.....
Day Four, and off to HMAS Westralia, unfortunately the High Power Chief CPOMTSM Tom Costello, had conveniently managed to be on leave (Funny how that happens when Sea Training Group arrives), however Dale the LSSTDSM on HMAS Westralia made sure I was well fed, and Graham Kemp, brother of Ray was also a friendly face.
The beginning of week two I chaired a charge board at Darwin Naval Base for a couple of POMTs, one of whom was off HMAS Cessnock where he had been prepared by his own charge CPOMTSM Colin Marshall, who was a part three on OVENS with me in 1993.

 Council misses out on warship
Cessnock council's hopes of getting the decommissioned HMAS Cessnock brought back to the city as a memorial have been dashed, with the ship due to be broken up and used for spare parts.
The ship is due to be decommissioned in Darwin in July and will be the last HMAS Cessnock to be commissioned by the Australian Navy.
But Mayor John Clarence says the naval disposal unit has offered the city the deck gun from the ship.
