The six-submarine class of HMAS Collins, HMAS Farncomb, HMAS Waller, HMAS Dechaineux, HMAS Sheean and HMAS Rankin are key elements of the Australian Defence Force, both as an intelligence-gathering platform during peace time and as a forceful opponent during times of war.
Their threat as part of an expeditionary force has been highly regarded, as they are practically invisible in the water, making them lethal to the enemy.
With the ability to roam far and wide or get in close and undetected to observe and listen, the submarines are a formidable element in Australia's defence capability and continually provide defence benefits well beyond their relative cost.
