Subsequently the cruiser HMAS ADELAIDE paid off and her crew, who were to man the new addition to the RAN, left Australia for the United Kingdom on 15 May 1939 in SS AUTOLYCUS.
On 29 June 1939 the cruiser commissioned in the RAN at Portsmouth as HMAS PERTH under the command of Captain Harold B Farncomb MVO RAN.

In company of HMAS Mildura, Broome, Wagga, Bathurst, Strahan and Castlemaine, she swept mines ahead of the British naval squadron entering Hong Kong harbour in August 1945.
Her bell and ship's nameplate were presented to the City of Fremantle and were accepted by the then Mayor, Sir Frederick Samson.

HMAS SWAN was laid down at HMA Naval Dockyard, Williamstown, Victoria, on 18 August 1965, and was the last River Class Destroyer Escort (DE) to be constructed in that dockyard.
HMAS SWAN was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on Tuesday, 20 January 1970, when her Commissioning Order was read by her first Commanding Officer, Commander DW Falconer, RAN.
HMA ships DERWENT and SWAN also participated in the event, which marked significant changes in Britain’s defence role in South East Asia, and ended the role of the previous naval command which had existed for 150 years.

Laid down in 1933 for the Royal Navy as HMS PHAETON, HMAS SYDNEY was purchased (before launching) by the Australian Government in 1934 and renamed in memory of the earlier SYDNEY which had destroyed the German cruiser EMDEN in 1914.
Arriving on the Australia Station on 2 August 1936 SYDNEY remained in home waters until the outbreak of war and was in Fremantle on the day war was declared.
SYDNEY remained on local patrol duties until April 1940 when she sailed from Fremantle as part of the escort for a large Middle East bound convoy.

Upon arrival at Leeuwin we were informed by the Staff and higher intakes alike, in no uncertain terms, that we were indeed "the lowest form of human existence on the planet" absolutely there was nothing as low as a JR, especially one of the newest intake.
This was reinforced by the local populations of Fremantle and Perth whose youth never missed an opportunity to give the 'Seaweed Suckers' a mouthful of abuse or even a belting if and when the opportunity arose.

In 1951, I was one of a crew of 1,427+ to set sail for Korea on board the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney, under the command of Captain David Harries.
As soon as the ship cleared the harbour we ran into the gale force wind and it was not long before it was not possible to walk upright on the flight deck.
