The first HMAS Gawler (J-188/B-241/A-115) was a Bathurst class corvette built by the BHP Shipyard at Whyalla in South Australia, launched on 4 October 1941 by Lady Duncan, wife of Sir Walter Duncan, and commissioned on 14 August 1942.
HMAS Gawler paid off on 5 April 1946, was transferred to the Turkish Navy and renamed Ayvalik.
The second HMAS Gawler (P-212) is a Fremantle class patrol boat laid down by the North Queensland Engineers and Agents at Cairns in Queensland on 18 January 1982, launched on 9 July 1983 and commissioned on 27 August 1983.

On April 11, 1943, HMAS Pirie was making her fifth trip to Oro Bay when the Japanese attacked the troops ashore with a force of 22 bombers and 72 fighters.
The RAN has now named one of its submarines HMAS Sheean and named the first of its new patrol boats HMAS Armidale in recognition of the courage and ingenuity that characterised the Australian corvettes in the Battle for Australia.

HMAS GAWLER was one of sixty Australian Minesweepers (commonly known as corvettes) built during World War II in Australian shipyards as part of the Commonwealth Government’s wartime shipbuilding programme.
GAWLER returned to the Indian Ocean at the end of October 1943 and rejoined the Eastern Fleet, having steamed 52,000 miles on war service.
On 17 October 1945 she arrived at Morotai Island and thereafter until the end of the year was one of a group of Australian warships engaged in surveillance of previously enemy occupied territory in the Moluccas and adjacent areas.

Leaving Australia in February 1941, barely one month after her commissioning, HMAS LISMORE steamed to Singapore, where she provided anti-submarine patrols outside the harbour before proceeding on to the Red Sea to become part of the Red Sea Force which was responsible for blockading the coast of French Somaliland.
In 1943, HMAS LISMORE was summoned to the Eastern Mediterranean Fleet to participate in "Operation Husky", the invasion of Sicily, the first major assault on German occupied Europe.
The town became a city, HMAS LISMORE became a memory, her crew became HMAS Lismore Association and its members, in diminishing numbers because of the ravages of age and illness, continue to make an annual pilgrimage to Lismore every Anzac Day from all parts of Australia.

HMAS Gawler (LCDR Chris Tziolis) boarded and apprehended a Type 3 Foreign Fishing Vessel (FFV) less than 12 hours after sailing from Darwin recently.
Gawler then sailed for patrol, when she apprehended the FFV within 12 hours of sailing.

In late 1941 and early 1942 the ships of the RAN were recalled to help in the defence of their island home.
GAWLER in the meantime was assisting one of the transports which found itself in difficulties.

HMAS ARARAT used a "K" prefix in honour of Canadian Corvette "Gladiolus" K34 that was sunk before ARARAT was built.
RAN Corvettes were named after provincial Australian cities and towns (except HMAS GLENELG which was named after a suburb of Adelaide).
Only 2 corvettes are still in existence, HMAS CASTLEMAINE as a floating museum ship at Williamstown, Victoria, and HMAS WHYALLA as a land based tourist display at Whyalla, South Australia.

The charm and facilities of Mountain Heritage were strongly marketed by the government at the time in their attempt to recruit additional labour to assist in the war effort.
After the war, the property was purchased by the Australian Government to house British Navy personnel and their families who were recruited by the Australian Navy to work on the new aircraft carriers HMAS Sydney and HMAS Melbourne.

When the Allies invaded Sicily early in 1943, a number of Australian corvettes were used as mine sweepers to enable the landing craft to reach the shore safely.
Among them were HMAS Maryborough and her sister ships Ipswich and Lismore.
We had all seen aircraft bursting into flames and crashing (apart from our victim) but it was impossible at that time to come up with a number.
