Commissioned in Sep 1984 and based at Cairns for her entire life, Gladstone (affectionately known by many as "Sadrock") contributed to border protection and regional engagement for 22 and a half years, and over 618,000 miles.

On 19 July 1940 HMAS Sydney was involved in the best known action of the Mediterranean campaign when off the coast of Crete, she came to the rescue of a British destroyer division on anti-submarine patrol that was being engaged by two Italian Cruisers.
HMAS Vampire was also the first Australian vessel to engage the Japanese navy when on the night of 26-27 January 1942 she, along with HMS Thanet attacked Japanese naval units off Endau, Malaya..
HMAS Yarra was given the responsibility of escorting a small convoy to Australia, but on 4 March was intercepted by a force of three Japanese cruisers and two destroyers.

HMAS GLADSTONE was one of sixty Australian Minesweepers (commonly known as corvettes) built during World War II in Australian shipyards as part of the Commonwealth Government's wartime shipbuilding programme.
GLADSTONE began her active operational career in April 1943, escorting merchant convoys on the Queensland coast, from Brisbane to northern ports and return.
In November and December 1945 GLADSTONE was employed on general surveillance of the Lesser Sundas and the transport of Netherlands East Indies troops from Darwin to Timor.

To prepare for this role she was towed to Williamstown for a complete engine overhaul with all other non essential equipment, such as guns, radar, radio, asdic, boats, minesweeping gear and deck fittings being removed.
In the end the idea was abandoned, and she remained at HMAS Cerberus, rusting away.

The HMAS Sydney was a formidable light cruiser that fought a naval battle with a German raider, HSK Kormoran on November 19th, 1941.
There is speculation about why the HMAS Sydney lost this battle against a supposedly inferior foe, though naval records are sealed for 75 years.

The Indonesian-licensed, Thai trawler Sithaichainavee 12 was apprehended by HMAS Gladstone on 21 January this year, fishing inside the AFZ off Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
The vessel, equipped with modern GPS navigational equipment, had one tonne of fresh catch on board and 22 crew members.
When sighted, the vessel attempted to avoid apprehension by HMAS Gladstone, but was successfully apprehended and brought in to Darwin.

Ted Treadwell 's assessment was that they must have attacked a sunken vessel and in their excitement merely thought it was moving.
On the 7 July 1943 when they were in a convoy enroute from Gladstone to Brisbane, one of the escorts, HMAS ML 429, made a depth charge attack on a suspected enemy submarine and SC 648 and HMAS Lithgow left station to assist.

From Australia SC 648 went with General MacArthur to New Guinea, the Admiralties, Cape Gloucester, thence to Leyte.
SC 648 operated with several Royal Australian Navy ships, among them HMAS Vendetta, HMAS Goulbourn, HMAS Geelong and HMAS Gladstone, which were similar to U.S. Destroyer Escorts.
On 23 July 1943, when they were in Gladstone, they were sent to rescue any survivors they could find from an Avro Anson medium bomber that had crashed on Heron Island.

 Illegal fishers cop a caning - Senator Ian Macdonald
In one operation crews on board HMAS Geraldton arrested two Indonesian vessels near Ashmore Reef off north Western Australia with several hundred sea cucumber on board.
Both vessels attempted to flee but were boarded after hot pursuit.
The most recent apprehension was on Friday when HMAS Gladstone arrested the five Indonesian crew on board a vessel near Evans Shoal, about 180 nautical miles north of Darwin.
