The Hobart was the second of its class to be modified for Australian service, and the first to be named after the city of Hobart in Tasmania.
She missed sailling with the rest of the attack force heading for the Battle of the Java Sea because of damage suffered by the tanker that she was refueling from.
Hobart was damaged by a torpedo in July 1943 in the Solomons, and was taken out of service for repairs and modernisation at the Cockatoo Docks in Sydney.

 Short History of HMAS Hobart
Hobart joined the escort on 1st Feb 1940 for the Colombo to Suez leg of the first troop convoy from Australia and New Zealand to the Middle East.
On 15th Aug Hobart led the force evacuating Empire troops from Berbera, and on the 19th she shelled the port installations as the Italians entered the town.
At dawn on the 28th, Hobart and her outdated companions passed through the Sunda Strait - the same waters in which her sister Perth would be sunk at the end of the day, and already containing the litter and wreckage of battle.

Hobart was initially assigned to the centre zone of the three DMZ NGFS areas, but also took responsibility for the southern zone on the 11th when Edson sailed south for NGFS near Hue.
Hobart's bombardment of Viet Cong base camps and concentration areas in the Long Hai hills east of Vung Tau was probably the first occasion that an Australian warship had fired in support of the Australian Army in the field since the Korean War, and perhaps since World War II.
On September 25, Hobart was relieved by USS Bone (DD 704) and handed over to HMAS Perth at Subic Bay on the 29th, having fired 16,370 rounds and steamed 44,579 miles in the 117 days of her deployment and having come under fire.

HOBART was at Aden when Italy entered the war on 10 June 1940 and her first shots against an enemy were fired two days later when her anti-aircraft guns opened fire on three Italian aircraft during a raid on Aden.
HOBART was operational headquarters for the evacuation and in common with other ships concerned, her personnel had many and varied occupations during the operation.
HOBART was fuelling at Tandjong Priok on 25 February 1942 when 27 bombers attacked her and the tanker from which she was fuelling.

At he outbreak of WW2 HMAS Hobart was in Sydney town, she put to sea and patrolled the eastern seaboard, This was followed by a very distinguished wartime career which took her to the Indian ocean, Mediterranean, Red Sea and Pacific.
HMAS Hobart completed three 6 month tours of duty off the coast of Vietnam in 1967, 1968 and 1970.

Early on the morning of June 17th Hobart detected an aircraft approaching her from the vicinity of Cap Lay and evaluated it as 'friendly'.
In the meantime whilst Hobart had been trying to establish the identity of the aircraft it launched a missile which hit her amidships on the starboard side, immediately aft of the boat davit.
On the 16th USS PCF19 was sunk near the DMZ with 5 killed and on the 17th Hobart, Boston and Edson were attacked.

In the clear, early evening of 20 July 1943, HMAS Hobart and the Allied ships of Task Force 74 were heading through waters near the Solomon Islands en route to Esperitu Santo when a sudden explosion ripped into the port side of Hobart.
Hobart lost thirteen of her crew in the attack and one American officer who was on board; seven others were badly injured.
The torpedo fired by the Japanese submarine damaged the keel and hull of HMAS Hobart.

In 1968 Lamb’s served on HMAS Hobart and up until his death this year 14/02/2004 was the Vice President of the Hobart association.
Lamb’s was a Stoker in the navy as well as being a cuff rate Ships Diver which is what led him to his early discharge from the navy after a diving accident in 1973 onboard HMAS Torrens which resulted in him breaking his neck and being discharged from the RAN in early 1974.
Lamb’s ashes were spread from HMAS Success in Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii the navy choosing the place for its naval significants as it is where Captain Cook met his end 225 years earlier to the day of Jeffs death.

At about 3.30am, the Hobart was patrolling (fled-out and maintaining radio silence) near Tiger Island, about 20kms off Cap Lay, when her radar room detected a fast, in-coming aircraft.
Hobart served out three tours of duty in Vietnam, however it seems after 1968 she had an extra crewman.
