In company with HMAS Deloraine, HMAS Lithgow and USS Edsall, she was officially credited with destroying the enemy Japanese submarine I-124 on 20 January 1942, the first enemy submarine sunk in Australian waters.
HMAS Katoomba paid off to reserve at Fremantle on 2 August 1948 and sold for scrap to the Hong Kong Rolling Mills on 2 May 1957.

HMAS Vampire was also the first Australian vessel to engage the Japanese navy when on the night of 26-27 January 1942 she, along with HMS Thanet attacked Japanese naval units off Endau, Malaya..
HMAS Yarra was given the responsibility of escorting a small convoy to Australia, but on 4 March was intercepted by a force of three Japanese cruisers and two destroyers.

HMAS Kanimbla paid off at Sydney on 25 March 1949 and returned to her owners on 13 December 1950.
The second HMAS Kanimbla (L-51) is a training and helicopter originally built as the Tank Landing Ship USS Saginaw for the United States Navy by the National Steel and Shipbuilding at San Diego in California.

 HMAS Katoomba
Katoomba was my first Australian ship, perhaps more importantly, it was the first ship I was posted to for "ship's duties", as opposed to "for training", and I became the ship's navigator.
At this time the tedium for constant convoy duties was over and the ship was engaged in helping rid the Barrier Reef of mines, laid mostly by the RAN, to protect the coastal route against intrusion by Japanese Submarines.
On most occasions, Katoomba was the rear ship whose job it was to lay danbuoys which marked the edge of the swept area.

Katoomba had before 1939 already seen war service as a requisitioned vessel, operating through many of the world's ports as a troopship, and returnee prisoner-of-war carrier from May 1918 to September 1919.
Katoomba was returned to her owners from requisition early in 1946, but was then sold without resuming her coastal trading role.

While the development of the Katoomba Coal Mine was proceeding in 1880, North had a prospector named Garbutt, prove the outcrops of Kerosene Shale on the Eastern side of the Narrow Neck, discovered there by Campbell 9 years before.
In 1925 a group of Katoomba Businessmen formed a syndicate to lease the mine from John North's estate and extract the "slack" or small coal that was considered not big enough to take from the mine and had been left my North's miners stacked up as roof supports.

Unlike most of her sisters which were never recalled to active duty, HMAS Mildura was brought forward as a National Service training ship and recommissioned in Fremantle on February 20, 1951.
Operating in Western Australian waters, Mildura was a familiar sight until her sister ship HMAS Fremantle replaced her in the training role in 1953.
Mildura’s last voyage was being towed out of Melbourne by the tug HMAS Sprightly on December 8, 1954 bound for Brisbane where she was moored in the Brisbane River in her new role as a training ship for naval reservists.

Also, I seem to remember that there was an earlier HMAS Katoomba which served around the time of the colonial navies, but I can’t seem to find much info on this.
HMAS Defiant was the ship in the TV series Patrol Boat.

On 21 October 1944, while HMAS Australia was taking part in the allied landings in the Philippines, Commodore Collins was severely wounded in a suicide attack by Japanese aircraft.
HMAS Collins was launched on 28 August 1993, and was handed over to the RAN on 15 July 1996.
