Two ships of the Royal Australian Navy have been named for the town of Lae in New Guinea.
The first HMAS Lae (L-3035) was a Mark III Tank Landing Ship built by Denny Brothers at Dumbarton in Scotland and launched on 24 October 1944.
The second Lae was an Attack class patrol boat.

HMAS Bandolier (16/11/73) and HMAS Archer (21/10/74) were given to Indonesia on the dates shown.
Five boats, HMAS Aitape, HMAS Lae HMAS Madang, HMAS Ladava and HMAS Samarai which were all part of the Papua New Guinea division of the RAN were all given to Papua New Guinea on 14 November 1974, presumably to assist them as they became a new nation the next year.
Today, HMAS Advance is on display at the National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour, Sydney (next to the Pyrmont Bridge) and HMAS Ardent is in Darwin as a memorial.

Having survived the Battle of the Java Sea HMAS Perth and the United States Cruiser Houston were sunk in a battle against overwhelming Japanese forces off the western tip of Java.
Lae and Salamaua were occupied by the Japanese to provide defensive depth for their important air and sea base at Rabaul.
HMA ships Perth, Vendetta and Stuart were among 13 Allied ships involved in the battle which saw the loss of five Italian ships and 1,230 men.

Both Lae and Salamaua were important to the Japanese because they possessed airstrips from which Allied counter-attacks on Rabaul had been launched.
The small Australian garrisons at Lae and Salamaua withdrew into the jungle as the Japanese were landing.
Nimitz was disappointed that the attacks on Lae and Salamaua had failed to dislodge the Japanese from their beachheads on the New Guinea mainland.

The HMAS AUSTRALIA, later was attacked and hit again FIVE times by Kamikaze aircraft in 1944-1945 - attaining the uneviable record surviving the most number of Kamikaze strikes on any one ship during the Second World War.
In March 1944 he assumed command of HMAS Australia and took part in the Hollandia landings and the bombardment of Wakde and Aitape, and the landings at Biak, Noemfoor and Morotai.

HMAS Kanimbla (L-51), a converted tank landing ship (LST) currently in commission as an amphibious transport ship (LPA).
The first HMAS Kanimbla (1936) was laid down as a motor vessel for McIlwraith McEachern Limited by Harland and Wolff Limited at Belfast in Northern Ireland in July 1933, launched on 15 December 1935 and completed on 26 April 1936.
The ship operated a passenger service between Cairns in Queensland and Fremantle in Western Australia until the outbreak of World War II when she was converted to an armed merchant cruiser at Sydney and commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Kanimbla on 6 September 1939.

His career highlights include having his first Charge job at age 22 onboard HMAS Lae (an Attack Class Patrol Boat based in PNG), being promoted as an SD to SBLT in 1976; this saw him off to England for 12 months.
He was the arresters engineer in HMAS Melbourne (1977-78), marine engineering officer (MEO) in HMA Ships Vampire and Perth, and finally serving as the engineer officer (EO) in Kanimbla.
