The first HMAS Launceston (J-179/B-246/A-120) was a Bathurst class corvette built by Evans Deakin and Company at Brisbane in Queensland, launched on 30 June 1941 by Mrs.
HMAS Launceston paid off on 23 March 1946, was transferred to the Turkish Navy and renamed Ayancik.
The second HMAS Launceston (P-207) is a Fremantle class patrol boat laid down by the North Queensland Engineers and Agents at Cairns in Queensland on 29 March 1980, launched on 23 January 1981 and commissioned on 6 March 1982.

HMAS LAUNCESTON was one of sixty Australian Minesweepers (commonly known as corvettes) built during World War II in Australian shipyards as part of the Commonwealth Government’s wartime shipbuilding programme.
On completion of trials LAUNCESTON was employed on escort duty around the coast of Australia until she left for Colombo in September 1942 to join the Eastern Fleet.
LAUNCESTON arrived at Brisbane on 29 October 1945 and then paid official visits to the town of Launceston from 16 to 25 December, and Hobart on 28 December where she was the flagship for the Hobart Regatta, before proceeding to Sydney, where she arrived on 11 January 1946.

An inquiry found that the mishap was probably caused by a strong south-westerly current which was not reported in the directories the master was using, and that he and his officers were blameless for her loss.
The boats were used to recover the vessel’s gear and some cargo.The Captain headed for Launceston in a sealer’s boat, where the SS Titania was chartered to rescue the passengers and take a surveyor to report on the wreck; he condemned her as a total loss.
From Hobart for Launceston, met heavy weather and sheltered under the lee of Clarke Island in the Furneaux group, and was driven from there on to a sandbank off Kent Bay, Cape Barren Island.

Yesterday in Launceston, Mrs Bobbin's motherly pride finally had plenty of reasons to bubble over as the crew of HMAS Launceston, which includes her son Matthew, marched through the city's streets as part of a ceremonial Freedom of the City parade.
HMAS Launceston's commanding officer, Lieutenant-Commander Alex Gibbs, said the Darwin-based patrol boat's crew particularly enjoyed the chance of marching in their winter dress uniform.
HMAS Launceston leaves port today, bound for Newcastle in New South Wales.

After various name changes (1939, HMAS Penguin IV; 1940, HMAS Brisbane), with the expansion of military events in the Pacific Region, it was commissioned as HMAS Moreton in 1942 and expanded to various depots down river.
HMAS Moreton was the initial point of entry to the RAN for Queenslanders during World War II and became a demobilization centre in 1945.
The Ipswich, with the second crew on board was present in Tokyo Bay during the surrender ceremony on 2nd September 1945, along with others of her minesweeping class, HMAS Ballart, Cessnock and Pirie.

[19] A boarding party from HMAS Geelong boarded the vessel in Australian waters on 4 November 2003 and a detention notice under s 245F of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) was served on the Master of the vessel in English and Indonesian at or about 2110 Darwin time.
The detention notice was issued by Lieutenant A P Staker, an officer of the Royal Australian Navy and alleged to be an "officer" for the purposes of s 245 of the Migration Act 1958.
At some stage the vessel was taken in tow to a holding position 14 nautical miles north, northeast of Cape Laury with HMAS Launceston in support.

Earlier this week 22 Thai fishermen on an Indonesian fishing vessel were apprehended off the coast near Nhulunbuy by navy patrol boat HMAS Gladstone.
The boat was carrying a large illegal haul of reef fish.David Crisafulli, adviser to Federal Fisheries Minister Ian McDonald, said illegal poachers in northern waters were becoming more barbaric and better equipped.

 Arrival in Darwin
Wondering whether we would ever make it to Darwin the calm and measured voice of the Coastal Watch Radio operator welcomed us into Australian Waters and within a few hours HMAS Launceston (pronounced Lawnsesston in Ozzie-speak!) was alongside us issuing calm instructions on our safest course to dry land.
After deliberation on quite who should join HMAS Launceston, Dean and I were plucked from the ailing La Boheme and we left the team to make the 30 mile journey around the Cox Peninsula to the safety of Darwin harbour.
After some great 'tucker' on board Launceston, we had a slightly lumpy night's sleep before reaching the sweeping expanse of Darwin harbour and the naval base.
