  HMAS Otway - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The first HMAS Otway was an O class submarine laid down by Vickers Limited of Barrow-in-Furness in England in March 1925, launched on 7 September 1926 and commissioned on 15 June 1927.
HMAS Otway paid off into Reserve on 10 May 1930, paid off for transfer to the Royal Navy on 9 April 1931 and commissioned as HMS Otway on 10 April 1931.
The second HMAS Otway (S-59) was an Oberon class submarine laid down by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company at Greenock in Scotland on 29 June 1965, launched on 29 November 1966 and commissioned on 23 April 1968.

 Royal Australian Navy Gun Plot - HMA Submarines
Above HMA Submarine J2 In 1923 there was vigorous debate on the subject of whether Britain should build replacement submarines for the "J" Class or build them in Australia.
The first of this new breed was HMAS Oxley, commissioned in March 1967, followed by her sisters HMAS Otway, HMAS Ovens and HMAS Onslow.
HMAS Oxley's arrival in Sydney coincided with the commissioning of the submarine base HMAS Platypus established at Neutral bay, Sydney.

ONSLOW had sailed from Pearl Harbor a day earlier with the mission to attack shipping as it departed from Pearl Harbor during the fleet break-out.
ONSLOW continues her success during Exercise Lungfish, the Australian and United States submarine exercise conducted south of Lanai Island in the Hawaiian group, proved a complete success.
The move to Hawaii enabled ONSLOW to use the Pacific Mile Range Facility at Kauai where she was able to achieve 100 per cent success rate in her torpedo firings.

Along with a generous donation of $100,000 by the widow of CMDR Norman Holbrook, Otway was brought to Holbrook by local fundraising.
In the city of Hastings near HMAS Cerberus in Victoria, plans have been put into motion to develop a Naval Memorial park, in which HMAS Otama will be the centrepiece.
Her bow was preserved and is on display at the WA Maritime Museum and her fin stands as an inspiration to future submariners out the front of the Submarine Training Systems Centre at HMAS Stirling in WA.

 Commanding Officer - HMAS Collins (Royal Australian Navy)
In 1993, then-Sub Lieutenant Miles commenced submarine training at HMAS PLATYPUS, and was awarded his dolphins later that year after serving on HMAS OVENS.
He was posted again to HMAS ONSLOW, this time as Operations Officer and was part of her decommissioning crew in 1999.
He completed the Submarine Executive Officers Course in 2000 and moved to Western Australia in 2001, briefly becoming Executive Officer of HMAS COLLINS as she entered refit, and then HMAS FARNCOMB, where he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 2002.

The first Onslow was an "M" class destroyer launched in 1916 and scrapped in 1921.
She saw action at the Battle of Jutland, where her captain was John Tovey, who later became Admiral of the Fleet.
The second Onslow was an O-class destroyer launched in 1941 which later saw service in the Pakistan Navy.

We went on two naval vessels - the Onslow which was a submarine and the HMAS Vampire, the destroyer.
Inside the Onslow, it was very small and the corridors were thin.
When we finally got out of the submarine and onto HMAS Vampire again, we got to go to the cabin and Katrina had a photo in the captain's chair.

Between 1979 and 1981, the Australian Navy’s Oberon class submarine, HMAS Onslow visited Eden on three occasions.
The visits by the Onslow not only reaped financial benefits for Eden, but firm friendships were made between the submariners and the townspeople of Eden.
The adoption ceremony took place at Snug Cove Wharf, Eden and was held as part of the Back to Eden celebrations which commemorated Eden Killer Whale Museum’s 50th anniversary.

HMAS SUPPLY was built as a war operations requirement for the RAN as a result of a Government direction in 1951 ordering the armed services to prepare for possible mobilisation by 1953.
She commissioned (as HMAS TIDE AUSTRAL) at Southampton on 15th August 1962 under the command of Captain Geoffrey V. Gladstone, DSC and Bar, RAN.
For those ex crew members who can remember the round house in the galley, a circular room roughly in the middle of the galley was originally designed as the gun bay of a 4" gun for defence of the ship, the gun being located on the deck immediately aft of the canteen.

Moored outside of it are a Daring Class Destroyer - the HMAS Vampire, an Oberon Class Submarine - the HMAS Onslow and an unclassed Dutch Bark (?) from 1629 - the Batavia (see below).
Moored (see how nautical I've become?) aghast the Vampire's Mezzanine (or put another way for you land-lubbers: parked next door) is the HMAS Onslow, an Oberon Class Submarine.
Not for the claustrophobic: you can go on a one-way (front-to-back) tour through the submarine starting at the torpedo-room and winding your way back out the submarine's "other end" just aft of (good thing this isn't in German...) the engine rooms (both electric and diesel).

The most memorable moment was us spastics (juliexjuliexsarahxbillie) running on the HMAS Vampire (ship) in the rain screaming and yelling, "We're lost!", well at least I was screaming that.
The HMAS Onslow submarine was so tiny I wonder how they could fit people in there!
But it was really fun being in there^^ And the Maritime Museum tour guide even complimented on how good we were compared to the rest of the selective and private schools they've had over the years.

The submarine HMAS Onslow was particularly interesting - I couldn’t imagine having to live in the cramped conditions of a sub for months at a time - I don’t think I could stand it.
Then we strolled back to the museum, and walked up and down and around the HMAS Vampire, sister ship to the doomed Voyager.

The highlight of the museum is the HMAS Onslow, a submarine that actually served in the Royal Australian Navy until 1999.
To see where the ship is piloted from makes me wonder how the captain could possibly use all the dials, screens, wheels and gauges to navigate an 89.90 meter ship around the ocean.
A visit to the HMAS Onslow brings a sense of wonder and a newfound appreciation for sailors.

The frigate is HMAS Vampire and the submarine tied up on its port side is HMAS Onslow.
We looked through both vessels and also spent some time in the museum itself which has various static and interactive displays.
We thought the living conditions looked pretty cramped and basic on the ship - until we went through the submarine!
