Royal Australian Navy Gun Plot - HMA Submarines
Above HMA Submarine J2 In 1923 there was vigorous debate on the subject of whether Britain should build replacement submarines for the "J" Class or build them in Australia.
The first of this new breed was HMAS Oxley, commissioned in March 1967, followed by her sisters HMAS Otway, HMAS Ovens and HMAS Onslow.
HMAS Oxley's arrival in Sydney coincided with the commissioning of the submarine base HMAS Platypus established at Neutral bay, Sydney.

In early 2000 the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) placed OTAMA, its last operational Oberon Class submarine, at 3 months notice for operations to be completed and committed the crew to the new Collins Class submarine training pipeline.

The Otama Project is a community based effort to set up the ex-RAN Oberon class submnarine, HMAS Otama, on permanent exhibtion at Hastings.
They all know that the permanent exhibition of the Otama will attract thousands of visitors to Hastings each year, and that this means the creation of many jobs, and a major increase in the spending by those visitors at local businesses.
The Otama Project is good for Hastings, and good for Victoria, and the time is well overdue for the Bracks Government to come clean and publicly reveal the real reasons why it is trying to stop it happening.

Ahoy - Mac's Web Log-Any old Iron? Canada wants to get rid of old Oberon Class Submarines.-
There is another O Class boat HMAS Otama, initially launched in UK by Princess Anne, sitting off the small town of Hastings on Western Port in Victoria.
It was supposed to have been acquired to turn into a Maritime tourist attraction at Hastings, but much discussion is taking place as to whom it will belong, who pays for what etc, in the meantime, the boat is slowly turning into what finally developed over in Canada, a pile of scap iron.
It is well time for some decisive action over Otama, before time runs out,and the proposed project is defeated, strangled by red tape, defeated by inaction.
