Otway was named after a cliffy promontory on the coastline of the State of Victoria, in turn, it had been named originally by Lieutenant James Grant, Commander of HMS Lady Nelson, in 1800, Cape Albany Otway, after a Royal Navy Captain of that name, who later went on to be promoted to Admiral.
Otway’s structure was cut into several sections, and together with the imposing Fin, was transported by semi trailer down the Hume Highway from Sydney to Holbrook.
HMAS Otway secure in her concrete bed, the model of B11, the statue of Norman Holbrook, and the Mark VIII Torpedo, all make up a fitting tribute to two brave Submariners and their crews so long ago, and so far away in World War 1.

HMAS Onslow (S-60), named for Onslow in Western Australia, was an Oberon class submarine laid down by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company at Greenock in Scotland on 4 December 1967, launched on 3 December 1968 and commissioned on 22 December 1969.
HMAS Onslow paid off in 1997 and is preserved at the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour in Sydney.
HMAS Oxley's arrival in Sydney coincided with the commissioning of the submarine base HMAS Platypus established at Neutral bay, Sydney.

HMAS OTWAY was commissioned on 1 April 1927 under the command of Lieutenant Commander George J.D. Tweedy RN.
OTWAY departed Portsmouth, in company with her sister ship HMAS OXLEY, on 8 February 1928 and proceeded to Malta where both submarines were based until November 1928.
OTWAY paid off on 9 April 1931 for transfer to the Royal Navy, commissioning as HMS OTWAY on 10 April 1931.

Holbrook has long considered itself a "submarine town", so when the HMAS Otway was decommissioned from the Royal Australian Navy, the town was presented with the submarine's fin.
HMAS Otway is certainly one of the more unusual sights on the Hume Highway!

So the third attempt to establish Australia's submarine force began in April and June 1927 when HMAS Oxley and HMAS Otway were commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy.
On the fifth attempt at establishing and Australian submarine arm the decision was taken to acquire a new force of four Oberon Class submarines to be built at Scotts on the Clyde.
In 1977-78 two more units, HMAS Orion and HMAS Otama, joined the squadron and all were eventually modernized in an ambitious and successful program.

 HMAS Otway
HMAS Otway - an Oberon Class submarine now resides at the Town of Holbrook, NSW.
This town formally known as Gremanton, was changed to Holbrook, to commemorate Lt Norman Holbrook RN, who during WW1 whilst commanding the submarine B-11 sailed into the Dardenelle Strait and torpedoed the Turkish battleship Messoudieh in Darden Bay and then returned safely.
He was awarded the first naval VC and his crew got the DSM.

The order for the O class submarines Oxley and Otway was placed in March 1925, under the premise that it was more cost efficient to have two new submarines instead of six obsolete.
Although, when HMAS Oxley left Malta she was under the command of Lt.Cdr.F.L. Getting, thus becoming the first 'Australian' submarine commander.
N.H. Shaw took over HMAS Otway when she arrived in Sydney on the 14 February 1929.

For those who have not driven the Hume to Melbourne in recent years, Holbrook is the last resting place of the casing of HMAS Otway and “spiritual home” of the Australian Submarine Squadron.
The surface of Otway had deteriorated over the years and the Holbrook Submarine Museum Committee sought Navy help for an operation to de-scale, prepare and preserve the hull.
LCDR Lee spoke at a ceremony at Holbrook on May 6 to hand the refurbished Oberon class submarine back and to present a commemorative plaque to president of the Submarine Association in the presence of the general manager of the council.

HMAS OTWAY, the Oberon Class submarine which now sits in a park at Holbrook in country NSW is now looking 'top class'.
In May of this year CMDR Ted Wynberg (CO HMAS PENGUIN) received a letter from Holbrook Shire Council requesting assistance to refurbish the memorial in preparation for the submariner's reunion in June.
The OTWAY was high-pressure water and garnet-blasted, scraped back and given two full coats of paint donated by the Submariners Association of Holbrook.
