  HMAS Quickmatch (G92) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMAS Quickmatch (G92/F04) was a Q class destroyer laid down by J. Samuel White and Company Limited of Cowes on the Isle of Wight in England on 6 February 1941, launched on 11 April 1942 by Mrs.
Shearman, commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Quickmatch on 14 September 1942, transferred to Australia and paid off on 15 May 1950, underwent conversion to a modern anti-submarine frigate at Williamstown Naval Dockyard in Victoria and re-commissioned on 23 September 1955.
HMAS Quickmatch paid off to reserve at Williamstown on 26 April 1963 where she served as an accommodation ship, was sold for scrap to the Fujita Salvage Company Limited of Osaka in Japan on 15 February 1972 and departed Melbourne for Japan under tow on 6 July 1972.

 HMAS QUICKMATCH - HMA Ship Histories (Sea Power Centre - Australia)
HMAS QUICKMATCH was one of eight Q Class destroyers built for the Royal Navy, although QUICKMATCH was commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy at Cowes, Isle of Wight, on 14 September 1942 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Rodney Rhoades DSC RAN.
On 28 March 1951 QUICKMATCH was towed by the tug HMAS RESERVE to Williamstown Naval Dockyard where work commenced on her conversion to a modern fast anti-submarine frigate.
QUICKMATCH completed five tours of duty in Far East waters, totalling almost two years of foreign service, as a unit of the Commonwealth Strategic Reserve, including several periods exercising with the forces of the South East Asia Treaty Organisation.

The frigate HMAS Gascoyne and motor launch HDML1074 were part of a hydrographic survey group that plotted the approaches to the landing beaches and then the landing ships HMA Ships Kanimbla, Manoora and Westralia were among hundreds of transports and landing craft.
The cruisers HMA Ships Australia and Shropshire, the latter having been transferred from the Royal Navy as a replacement for HMAS Canberra lost at Guadalcanal in August 1942, and destroyers HMA Ships Arunta and Warramunga were part of the covering force.
Damage to the fore funnel of HMAS Australia caused by a Japanese kamikaze attack during the battle at Lingayen Gulf in January 1945.

Early in March, 1962, HMAS QUIBERON proceeded to sea on completion of refit and began the laborious and none-to-popular task of work-ups.
In company with HMAS QUICKMATCH the ship sailed for Northern waters bordering the "Sunshine State" and in the latter stages of May and in early June visited Brisbane, Mackay and Townsville.
HMAS "Quickmatch" and "Quiberon" made goodwill visit to Port June 1st to 4th." The record further suggested that the port be 'improved' to attract more visits from HMA Ships.

She commissioned as HMAS QUADRANT at Sydney on 18 October 1945 under the command of Acting Lieutenant Commander William F. Cook RAN.
She commissioned as HMAS QUEENBOROUGH at Sydney on 29 October 1945 under the command of Commander Arnold H. Green DSC RAN.
The conversion was completed at the end of 1954 and she recommissioned on 7 December 1954 as a unit of the 1st Frigate Squadron.

Containing over 80 general photos of the class, it also goes through their conversion to Type 15 ASW frigates (except for HMAS Quality which was paid off shortly after transfer to the RAN).
After WW2, 3 of the surviving 4 Q class Destroyers were transferred to the RAN in place of the N class Destroyers.
They served the RAN well up to1972, when HMAS Queenborough (which had been converted to a training ship) was paid off.

In 1960 he qualified as a Destroyer Gunnery Officer, was promoted to Lieutenant and joined the HMAS QUICKMATCH as Gunnery Officer until 1962 when he proceeded to the United Kingdom to undertake a long Gunnery Course at HMS EXCELLENT.
In 1969 he joined HMAS VENDETTA as Gunnery Officer and from September, 1969 to March 1970 saw operational service when VENDETTA was attached to the US Seventh Fleet for Gunline operations in Vietnam.
In 1973 and 1974 he served in as the Navigating Officer of HMAS ANZAC and HMAS DERWENT prior to undertaking training a s a Principal Warfare Officer in England.

SA veterans who served on HMAS Tobruk have told The Advertiser of being constantly ready for attack and on the alert for enemy frogmen armed with underwater mines, describing how they bombarded communist positions from the battle fleet and, unlike other servicemen, were absent from their families for up to 10 months.
Many are now advanced in years with deteriorating health and deserve the effort after serving their country onboard HMA Ships in conditions we know only too well as less than favourable.

I joined the Navy at 17 in 1956, and served in Malayan waters on HMAS Quickmatch in 1956 and 1957.
We didn't see action in the sense that we were attacked, but we were in the war zone.

War broke out during the tour, and he enlisted in the RAN in June 1944 as an O.D.2.
Ferris Ashton joined the Destroyer HMAS Quickmatch in November 1944 as a bridge lookout and served along with HMAS Quiberon with the British Pacific Fleet in all Carrier actions at Sachashima, Gunto, Formosa, Okinawa and Japan until the surrender in August 1945 and on occupation duties until February 1946.
He broke his left patella in an accident on leave, and did a stint of 14 months in the Naval Recruiting Office on G.I. until discharging in November 1947.

April 1, 1945, D-Day for the invasion of Okinawa found me, a U.S. Navy Signalman Second Class, serving aboard the HMAS QUICKMATCH,an Australian destroyer in the British Pacific Fleet (BPF).
When the war in Europe moved inland,Winston Churchill had offered elements of the Royal Navy to President Roosevelt for service against the Japanese.
The assignment to the BPF was an interesting experience, but one I would not like to do again.

A 30 year reunion will be held on Saturday the 7th October 2006 at the Joondalup Golf Resort and Hotel in Perth Western Australia.
A reunion for all who served on HMAS VOYAGER will be held in Adelaide from 9th to 11th February 2007 to closely correspond with the 50th Anniversary of her completion and commissioning and also the 43rd Anniversary of her sinking.

In July and Sept 1942 Quiberion and Quickmatch were respectively commissioned into the RAN and the remainder Quality, Quadrant and Queenborough were operated by the Royal Navy before being handed over to the RAN in the latter part of 1945.

Visited a local embroidery shop and made some enquiries into the possibility of having a Quickmatch cap produced.
