Garden Island was renamed and first settled by James Stirling in 1827 who "prepared a garden and released a cow, two ewes and three goats in a area of good pasture with good water supply".
Stirling returned in 1829 to take up his grant of 100,000 acres (405 square kilometres) plus any livestock remaining from the previous visit.
HMAS Stirling is at present home to six frigates and all submarines of the Australian Submarine Squadron which has its headquarters located at the base.

It commenced in January, 1996 when the guided-missile frigate HMAS DARWIN, commanded by CMDR Davyd Thomas, was crash-sailed from HMAS STIRLING in Western Australia to rescue French yachtswoman Isabelle Autisier from her disabled yacht.
HMAS AUSTRALIA's commanding officer, CAPT G.C. Oldham, was advised at 1445 local time that the ship may be required for a mercy mission to Heard Island in the Southern Ocean to medevac a scientist, Dr Udovikoff, who was suffering from appendicitis.
HMAS AUSTRALIA resumed her training role with her last major activity being as part of the Royal Escort for the visit of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1954.

 HMAS Swan
HMAS SWAN was laid down at HMA Naval Dockyard, Williamstown, Victoria, on 18 August 1965, and was the last River Class Destroyer Escort (DE) to be constructed in that dockyard.
HMAS SWAN was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on Tuesday, 20 January 1970, when her Commissioning Order was read by her first Commanding Officer, Commander DW Falconer, RAN.
HMA ships DERWENT and SWAN also participated in the event, which marked significant changes in Britain’s defence role in South East Asia, and ended the role of the previous naval command which had existed for 150 years.

The first of class HMAS Collins (73) was commissioned in 1996.
HMAS Farncomb (74) was commissioned in January 1998, HMAS Waller (75) in February 2001, HMAS Dechaineux (76) in February 2001, HMAS Sheean (77) in November 2000 and HMAS Rankin (78) in March 2003.
The programme was completed in March 2003.The upgrade programme was designed to rectify shortcomings identified in a Government Report and included: upgrades to weapon systems, improvements to the sonar system, tactical data handling system and weapons control system, upgrade and improvement of the combat system and operational fixes to reduce acoustic signature.

After months of pushing for Ms Wiggins's case to be investigated, Lieutenant-Commander Fahy was dismissed from her duties at HMAS Stirling.

This gun turret was orinally mounted on the destriyer escort HMAS DERWENT (DE-49) which served in the Royal Australian navy Between 1964-1994.
It is a Vickers 4.5 inch (114mm)/45 Mk 6 gun turret which was capable of firing 20 rounds per barrel per minute to a range of 10 kilometres.
HMAS DERWENT holds the distinction of being the first RAN ship to launch a guided missile when she fired a Seacat missile on 25th May. 1964
