  HMAS Tobruk (L50) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMAS Tobruk (L-50) is a Landing Ship Heavy (LSH) of the Royal Australian Navy, based on the design of the "Sir" class of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
Tobruk was the first purpose built amphibious vessel in the RAN, and is designed as a multi-purpose, ro-ro heavy lift and transport vessel - the ship can be loaded via ramps at both the bow and stern, and can be purposely beached.
Tobruk has a standard capacity of 300 troops, with an overload capacity of 520.

The first HMAS Tobruk (D-37) was a Battle class destroyer laid down by The Cockatoo Docks and Engineering Company Propriety Limited at Sydney in New South Wales on 5 August 1946, launched on 20 December 1947 by Mrs.
Tobruk was accidentally hit by a shell from HMAS Anzac while exercising with the fleet off the east coast of Australia in September 1960.
HMAS Tobruk paid off into reserve on 29 October 1960, was sold for scrap to Fujita Salvage Company Limited of Osaka in Japan on 15 February 1972 and departed Sydney under tow on 10 April 1972.

HMAS Sydney's catapult (for launching aircraft) was giving the crew considerable problems caused by malfunctions and when there was a breakdown rumours were rife that we were to proceed to the Naval Dockyard at Hong Kong for repairs.

HMAS Anzac had a second tour of duty in Korea in 1952 and distinguished herself as she had during the first tour.
There can be no doubt that HMAS Anzac, in her two tours of duty in Korea, carried on the immortal tradition originated by those heroic soldiers at the landing of Gallipoli in 1915.

Two ships of the Royal Australian Navy have been named HMAS Tobruk after the town of Tobruk in Libya, captured from the Italians by Australian and other allied forces in January 1941 and besieged by the Germans from April to October 1941.
The first Tobruk was a Battle-class destroyer launched in 1947.
The second Tobruk is an amphibious heavy lift ship laid down by Carrington Slipways at Newcastle, New South Wales on 7 February 1978, launched on 1 March 1980 and commissioned on 23 April 1981.

This is the Tri-ang Minic Ships model of HMAS Tobruk a Royal Australian Navy ship built to the British "Battle" Class destroyer design and named after an historical battle in keeping with the "Battle" Class naming convention of the Royal Navy.
The "Battle" Class ships were originally designed with a view to operations in the Pacific during the Second World War and were unusual in being the first destroyers to have all of their main armament mounted forward.
Tri-ang Minic produced identical models of the two Australian "Battle" Class destroyers HMAS Anzac and HMAS Tobruk which were distinguished only by the model number and name marked on the underside.

These rare colour shots of HMAS Tobruk were sent to me by Terry Wright, himself a US Coastgaurd veteran (USCGC Ingam), from Missouri, USA.
The Story has it that USS Cunnigham had been hit by enemy shore batteries and had a badly damaged Radar Wave Guide (a most important piece of apparatus).
Tobruk's well set up workshop, together with her onboard expertise, received it by way of Underway Transfer, repaired it and sent it back.
