  THE HMAS WARREGO STORY
Warrego was employed on anti-submarine, mine sweeping and local defence duties out of Darwin till the 17/1 when in company with USS Pillsbury they escorted MV Koolama carrying AIF troops bound for Ambon where they arrived on the 22nd.
On the 19/2/42 Warrego was at anchor in Darwin Harbour.
After a refit in Brisbane, Warrego resumed to the same duties with the area of operation shifting to the North Coast of NG as the Japs were pushed back and the towns re-taken.

 HMAS WARREGO (II) - HMA Ship Histories (Sea Power Centre - Australia)
WARREGO sailed from Darwin on 23 February 1943 and on arrival at Thursday Island resumed her former role as an escort vessel to New Guinea, operating between Townsville, Milne Bay and Merauke.
WARREGO remained on task assisting the Department of Civil Aviation until 26 June and, supported by KIMBLA and clearance divers from HMAS RUSHCUTTER, salvaged 95 percent of the wreckage of VH-TFB from the seabed.
WARREGO was declared for disposal in 1964 and on 2 June 1965 was sold to Metal Traders (Australia) Pty Ltd, Sydney.

 Australian Military Units
HMAS Warrego was built in Scotland and then dismantled and shipped to Sydney where she was reconstructed at the Cockatoo Island shipyard to provide it with construction experience.
Warrego led the Australian destroyer force into Port Jackson as part of the ceremonial entry of the Australian Fleet Unit on 4 October 1913.
Warrego returned to Australia in February 1915 and was employed on patrol work locally and in Malayan, Philippines and East Indies waters.

HMAS WARREGO was one of six River Class Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Australian Navy between 1909 and 1916.
WARREGO was built in the United Kingdom, then taken to pieces and the parts shipped out to Cockatoo Dockyard, Sydney, where they were re-assembled.
WARREGO continued to be employed on anti-submarine and escort duties until the end of hostilities in November 1918.

The frigate HMAS Gascoyne and motor launch HDML1074 were part of a hydrographic survey group that plotted the approaches to the landing beaches and then the landing ships HMA Ships Kanimbla, Manoora and Westralia were among hundreds of transports and landing craft.
The cruisers HMA Ships Australia and Shropshire, the latter having been transferred from the Royal Navy as a replacement for HMAS Canberra lost at Guadalcanal in August 1942, and destroyers HMA Ships Arunta and Warramunga were part of the covering force.
HMAS Gascoyne and HMAS Warrego carried out survey tasks and escort duties in Lingayen Gulf whilst under attack from both enemy aircraft and shore artillery batteries.

The first Australian warship, the destroyer HMAS Parramatta, was launched at Govan in Scotland on Wednesday 9 February 1910 and its sister ship HMAS Yarra, was launched at Dumbarton in Scotland on Saturday 9 April 1910.
At the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in October 1944, HMAS Australia became the first Allied ship to be hit by a kamikaze.
By the mid-late 1960s, the RAN was at the zenith of its operational capabilities; it was capable of despatching a full carrier battle group in support of major operations by having in service an aircraft carrier, three large area defence destroyers of the Perth class, six modern "River" class frigates and four Oberon class submarines.

A force of New Zealand troops, escorted by HMA Ships Australia and Melbourne, HM Ships Psyche, Philomel, Pyramus, and the French cruiser Montcalm landed on the Samoan island of Apia on 30 August 1914.
On 11 September 1914, a force consisting of HMA Ships Australia, Sydney, Encounter, Warrego, Yarra, Parramatta, submarines AE1 and AE2, a store-ship, three colliers, and the Berrima with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force embarked, arrived off Rabaul.
The second force was involved in a series of short contacts with German forces on its march inland to Bitapaka and finally occupied the radio station there around 7 pm.

John's source for the photograph of USS Houston (at anchor in Darwin) was the wife of the late Ron Beard who saw action while a member of HMAS Warrego’s No. 1 forward gun during the aborted convoy to Koepang and the Darwin air raid.
I've been sent a set of photographs taken from the sloop HMAS Warrego while she was in Darwin early 1942.They contain one of the Houston, (close and good quality - above) another of the USS Langley (distant, and therefore not such good quality - below).
The widow of one of Warrego's crew was the source, and her son has OK'd me to pass them on to you.

HMAS Parramatta was active during World War II in the East Indies and in the Mediterranean, and was sunk by torpedo attack from the German submarine U559 on 27 November 1941 with only 24 survivors from a total of 160 on board.
Subsequently the drawings were used for the construction of HMAS Parramatta and Warrego; later dates, ship numbers and names were added to some drawings, and some additional drawings with ‘A’, ‘B’ or other letter suffixes were included.
This series of drawings shows details of the outfit of the vessel and include general arrangements, profiles and sections; details of pumping, flooding and draining, of fresh and salt water services, and of ventilation; magazine; and a docking plan.

Reg trained at the naval station HMAS Cerberus to be a stoker and, receiving his first sea posting, joined the heavy cruiser HMAS Canberra.
After spending some time with his family in Australia, he was posted to another corvette, HMAS Castlemaine, and served in the waters of northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Reg was then sent to England in HMAS Kanimbla, where he waited for the first Australian aircraft carrier, HMAS Sydney, to be handed over to the RAN.

Within six days of war being declared HMAS Australia, Sydney, Warrego, Yarra and Parramatta had arrived in New Guinea in search of the German Navy Pacific Squadron.
