HMCS Athabaskan is a name used by three ships of the Canadian Navy.
HMCS Athabaskan (G07), a Tribal Class destroyer, commissioned in 1943.
HMCS Athabaskan (R79), later renumbered (DDE 219), a Tribal Class destroyer commissioned in 1948.

MCS ATHABASKAN was a Canadian built Tribal class destroyer and was the last of her class to be completed.
First wearing pennant R79, then DDE219, she paid off in April 1966 and was broken up in 1969.
The RCN photo above depicts Athabaskan just before she was paid off and was submitted by George Webster.

HMCS Athabaskan (G 07) was the first of three destroyers of the Canadian Navy to bear this name.
Athabaskan was lost in the English Channel the night of 29 April 1944.
Her commanding officer LCdr John Stubbs was killed in action after declining rescue by HMCS Haida to swim back for more crew members.

 TRIBAL Class
On April 29, 1944, ATHABASKAN was sunk after being hit by several torpedoes, with the outright loss of 128 men.
ATHABASKAN (II) was the second Tribal class ship to bear that name, with ATHABASKAN (I) part of the first batch of ships.
ATHABASKAN at sea in a similar state as the first photo, but with a new Sperry navigation radar fitted to the mast-head.

HMCS Clayoquot (Bangor Class Minesweeper - J174) was torpedoed by U-806 off Halifax on 24 December 1944 as described in Chapter 56 of "The Canadian Naval Chronicle 1939-1945".
As Torpedo Coxswain aboard HMCS Montreal, he has gained the respect of all his shipmates with the capable handling of his men in the most difficult and trying tasks he has been called on to perform.
HMCS Ottawa was sunk on 13 September 1942 when torpedoed in the mid-Atlantic on 13 September 1942.
