The escort group E.G. 9, made up of HMC Ships NENE, LOCH ALVIE, MONNOW, ST PIERRE AND MATANE, was steaming out of the mouth of the River Foyle leaving Londonderry, with orders to proceed to join the escort force, for Russian Convoy J.W. 67 outward and R.A. 67 homeward bound.
Rumours of peace being imminent abounded as we sailed, as allied forces were at the gates of Berlin and we were expecting word momentarily that the war was at an end.
This is further substantiated by Don's arrival at an earlier posting on HMCSEttrick.
He purchased the Ettrick, and continued to beachcombe around the islands, as well as retrieve kangaroo skins obtained by two aboriginal women he kept on King Island.
Wrecked ashore near the entrance of the Ettrick River, south of Currie,King Island, 2 June 1976.
The paddle steamer Manchester and HMCS Victoria were sent to rescue the castaways and recover the specie.
Commodore Raymond Fitzmaurice D.S.O. was in Lindenhall, Vice Commodore R. Ramsey was in Ettrick.
The convoy had 37 ships when sailing from Halifax, 25 joined from Sydney (SHX convoy), and 15 from Bermuda (BHX 62), escorted by HMS Montclare for a total of 77, 67 of which were still present at local escort rendezvous on Aug. 11.
I would like to say that Commodore R.B. Ramsey as Vice Commodore in S.S. Ettrick was of the very greatest help and his position in the middle of the convoy did a very great deal to keep the convoy together.
The aircraft had been under development since 1942 as a replacement for the Mitsubishi A6M, Navy Type 0 Carrier Fighter, Allied Code Name "Zeke." The A7M1 was as maneuverable as the "Zeke" but was underpowered and lacked performance.
Only ten of these aircraft, given the Allied Code Name "Sam," were built by Mitsubishi at Nagoya 1944 - Minesweeper HMS Chameleon launched 1944 - Frigate HMCS Toronto commissioned 1944 - Frigate USS Brownsville commissioned 1944 - Two men from U-348 stepped on a land mine near Stavanger.
The boat departed for its second patrol from Bergen on the 20th.
The new law obligates ship owners to subscribe to insurance so that sailors are guaranteed to get overtime pay and retirement allowance in case of their bankruptcies.
Pacific Fleet VS squadrons reassigned to Sea Control Wing Atlantic 2005 - Allan Snowie, Canada’s last Landing Signal Officer (LSO) of aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure retired from Air Canada.
Snowie authored the books “The Bonnie” and “Collishaw and Company” 2005 - Vice Admiral Sureeesh Mehta PVSM AVSM, Indian Deputy Chief of Naval Staff will take over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command from Vice Admiral O P Bansal PVSM AVSM VSM, when he retires.
Shortly after, I found myself bound for Halifax with a group of new recruits.
I guess we were one of the first to make the trip to the training base H.M.C.S. Stadacona, where we were outfitted with ill-fitted uniforms and introduced to the fundamentals of naval discipline.
The next thing I recall is being trucked with our group to somewhere around Cheticamp, Nova Scotia, where we were embarked on a fairly small steamer H.M.S. Ettrick.
