He was a graduate of the Ontario and Canadian police colleges and the FBI National Academy in Washington D.C. Born on a farm in Listowel in 1925, he had a fascination for the water and in his teens worked on Lake Erie coal freighters.
Torrance served on the HMCS Cornwallis in Halifax, where he was trained in a variety of areas including gunnery, explosives and signals and specialized in torpedoes and depth-charges.
He was later transferred to HMCS Esquimalt, which patrolled the western Atlantic waters out of St. John's, Newfoundland.

Congratulations are extended to Commander Bob Willson of HMCS Haida for his persistence and the co-operation of the Command Museum for making the appearance of this equipment possible on Haida.
A phone call, followed by a trip to Guelph one week later, completed the transaction and another piece of missing equipment was acquired for Haida.
On August 30/93, HMCS Haida celebrated the 50th anniversary of her commissioning.

The Second World War and the Royal Canadian Navy beckoned and in 1941 he joined the navy as a 16-year-old seaman and began training at the HMCS Star in Hamilton where he also served as duty bugler.
He was later transferred to HMCS Esquimalt that patrolled the western Atlantic waters out of St. John's, Newfoundland.
Torrance returned to duty, this time on board the HMCS Haida that worked dangerous convoy duty, accompanying merchant ships to Murmansk in Russia.

For over a year he had command of HMCS Prince David and was senior Officer of HMC ships operating under orders of the Commanding Officer Alaskan Sector.
At the termination of this appointment, he returned again to sea as Commanding Officer of HMCS Prince Henry for a period of more than a year, from January 1944 until April 1945.
During this time, the HMCS Prince Henry participated in landings in Greece and in D-Day operations.
