HMCS Magnificent was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Canadian Navy, in service from 1946 to 1956.
Purchased from the Royal Navy to replace HMCS Warrior, she served in a variety of roles, operating both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft.
Her last role was as a transport during the Suez Crisis, carrying a large part of the Canadian peacekeeping force to Egypt, its vehicles parked on her deck.

HMCS C1 and HMCS C2 spent the first three years of the war patrolling the Pacific; however, the lack of German threat saw them reposted to Halifax in 1917.
A planned transfer of two light aircraft carriers from the Royal Navy, HMCS Warrior and HMCS Magnificent was slowed, and when Warrior was found to be unsuitable for a North Atlantic winter, she was sent to the west coast and the next year was replaced by Magnificent, with Warrior being given back to the RN.
HMCS Magnificent stopped being used as an active carrier by the mid-1950s and was used as a vehicle transport during Canada's peacekeeping response to the 1958 Suez Crisis before being paid off and replaced by HMCS Bonaventure, a more modern aircraft carrier which was subsequently updated with an angled flight deck.

The Sea Fury flying off HMCS Magnificent; one of a total of 75 Sea Furys which served with the Royal Canadian Navy between 1948 and 1956.
FZ 425 was deployed on board HMCS Warrior until August 1947 when it was transferred to the Training Air Group in Dartmouth, N.S. It was retired from service upon arrival of the Sea Furys in 1949.
In 1960, it was relocated to HMCS Tecumseh, Calgary's naval reserve division.

 HMCS Bonaventure
The HMCS Bonaventure was acquired in the early 1950's by the Royal Canadian Navy[?], which was looking to replace its aging WW2-vintage light carriers[?] (HMCS Magnificent[?] and HMCS Warrior[?]) which were deemed too small and slow for the jet age.
Several surplus US and UK ships were considered, and the then-mothballed[?] HMS Powerful[?] Majestic Class[?] light fleet carrier was purchased in 1952 from the Royal Navy on the condition that it be refitted with a then novel angled flightdeck[?] and steam catapult[?].
The HMCS Bonaventure - named after an island bird sanctuary in the Gulf of St. Lawrence - was commissioned into the Canadian Navy on January 17, 1957, upon completion of its refit and modernization.

HMCS MAGNIFICENT - Served With the RCN from 1948 to 1957.
WARRIOR was finally commissioned at Belfast on January 24, 1946, arriving at Halifax on March 31 with the Seafires and Fireflies of 803 and 825 Squadrons.
WARRIOR accordingly returned to the East coast in February 1947, where she was engaged most of the year in sea training and, latterly, in preparations for her return to the RN.

In March 1948, HMCS Warrior was paid off and replaced by HMCS Magnificent, which arrived with the first batch of Hawker Sea Fury aircraft to replace the obsolete Seafires on 803 and 883 Squadrons.
The first version of the Tracker, the CS2F-1, was delivered to VS 881 in February 1957 and the squadron embarked in the newly arrived aircraft carrier H.M.C.S. Bonaventure in September 1957.
With the demise of H.M.C.S. Bonaventure as an aircraft carrier in 1968 the Tracker was re-rolled as a land based maritime reconnaissance aircraft and VS 880 was redesignated a Maritime Reconnaissance squadron, MR 880.

The Grumman Avenger was a WWII era plane that flew from MAGNIFICENT as an ASW aircraft.
The Sikorsky H04-S served on both MAGNIFICENT and BONAVENTURE, although on Bonnie in much reduced numbers; one helo was retained after the Sea Kings were acquired for use as a plane guard.
