Canada's Navy: HMCS PROTECTEUR - About the Ship
It was HMCS PROTECTOR that put together the convoys, arranged their escorts, issued the sailing orders and did one-thousand-and-one other things that were necessary for the naval war effort in Cape Breton Island and surrounding waters.
The first, HMCS PROVIDER, was commissioned in 1963, and until the construction of PROTECTEUR in 1969, extensive studies had been carried out on her transfer of stores and fuel at sea, optimum stowage and handling capabilities.
PROTECTEUR's Supply Department assumed the duties and responsibilities of MATCONOFF (MATERIAL CONTROL OFFICER) which meant that she was responsible for coordinating all stores and personnel coming into the theatre by sea.
