HMCS Terra Nova is a Canadian destroyer escort of the Restigouche class.
She was built in and served in the 1991 Gulf War.
Like all Cold War-era Canadian destroyers, she is named for a river, in this case the Terra Nova River in Newfoundland.

HMCS GATINEAU, shown here, is a good example of the refits carried out on the IMPROVED RESTIGOUCHE class in the 1960s.
A member of this class, HMCS TERRA NOVA, served in the Gulf War after the replacement of the ASROC launcher with two Harpoon SSM quad launchers and a Phalanx CIWS (Close-In Weapons System) 20mm cannon over the Limbo mortar well.
TERRA NOVA joined her at the end of July, 1997.

During the gale,she started dragging her anchor and was drifting down onto the helpless oil rig.ATHABASKAN's helicopter was launched and in extremely difficult flying conditions,rescued the crew of the oil rig and flew them to safety on Sable Island.The pilot received a CDS commendation for his efforts.
During the ensuing battle,HMCS ATHABASKAN was torpedoed and sank with the loss of her commanding Officer together with ten officers and 100 men were lost; five officers and eighty men were picked up by the Germans and spent the remainder of the war in POW camps.
There she again came under the public eye when,on march 1 st. 1964 she went to the aid of the Liberian tanker Amphialos which had broken in two during a severe storm.In a rescue operation calling for a high degree of daring and seamanship,she rescued 34 out of 36 crew members of the doomed tanker.

HMCS TERRA NOVA RESCUES U.S. Last week, while on working-up exercises with HMCS Nipigon in the waters off the U.S. state of Virginia, HMCS Terra Nova, commanded by Commander Rick Williams, intercepted a distress message from a U.S. fishing vessel the Valley Wind which was apparently taking on water.
Terra Nova responded immediately and dispatched crew members with pumps to the floundering vessel.
Valley Wind's bilge pumps were fouled and an attempt to use the pumps from Terra Nova proved fruitless.

 Canada's Navy: HMCS WINNIPEG - Meet the Crew: The Captain and Command Team
In Jan 1993, Chief Petty Officer Watts was posted to HMCS VANCOUVER, the first HALIFAX Class Frigate on the West Coast, as the Senior Naval Electronics Technician.
Chief Petty Officer Watts was awarded the Order of Military Merit (MMM) in 2003, receiving the honour from Her Excellency the Governor General, Adrienne Clarkson, in November 2003.
Chief Petty Officer Watts was posted to HMCS WINNIPEG as the Coxswain in June 2004.
