The original vessel, HMCS Toronto (K538) was a River-class frigate that served in the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Navy.
HMCS Toronto was commissioned in May 1944 and served 18 months, retiring in November 1945.

In November of 1955 he was posted to Canadian Vickers Shipyard in Montreal to stand-by the building of HMCS Ottawa, and became her first Engineer Officer when she commissioned in November of 1956.
In November of 1958 he was sent to Halifax Shipyards to stand by the building of HMCS Chaudiere, and became her first Engineer Officer on commissioning in November of 1959.
In July of 1964, he was appointed in Command of HMCS Algonquin, being the first officer of the Engineering Specialization in the history of the RCN to command a sea-going warship.

When the Royal Canadian Navy announced in 1963, that Canada's most famous warship, HMCS Haida, was to be retired from service, a group of sentimental Toronto men started a campaign to save her from the scrap heap.
Neil Bruce began a series of trips between Toronto and Ottawa and Halifax to convince both the government and the Royal Canadian Navy that the Haida project was possible.
In addition, $2,500 had to materialize in order to insure the crew of HMCS York, Haida herself during the trip down the Seaway, and liability insurance had to be provided for her first year in Toronto.

NOTE: A navy investigation is currently being conducted into a fatal fire aboard HMCS Chicoutimi which killed a sailor and injured several others during its maiden voyage from Faslane, Scotland, to Halifax in October 2004.
Currently the investigation is focusing on hatches that were improperly closed, thus allowing seawater inside while the sub was on the surface in a period of rough weather, as well as faulty insulation for wires and a panel near the commanding officer's cabin.
