 HMCS Bonaventure
The HMCS Bonaventure was acquired in the early 1950's by the Royal Canadian Navy[?], which was looking to replace its aging WW2-vintage light carriers[?] (HMCS Magnificent[?] and HMCS Warrior[?]) which were deemed too small and slow for the jet age.
Several surplus US and UK ships were considered, and the then-mothballed[?] HMS Powerful[?] Majestic Class[?] light fleet carrier was purchased in 1952 from the Royal Navy on the condition that it be refitted with a then novel angled flightdeck[?] and steam catapult[?].
The HMCS Bonaventure - named after an island bird sanctuary in the Gulf of St. Lawrence - was commissioned into the Canadian Navy on January 17, 1957, upon completion of its refit and modernization.

WARRIOR was finally commissioned at Belfast on January 24, 1946, arriving at Halifax on March 31 with the Seafires and Fireflies of 803 and 825 Squadrons.
WARRIOR accordingly returned to the East coast in February 1947, where she was engaged most of the year in sea training and, latterly, in preparations for her return to the RN.
She was commissioned on April 7, 1948, and spent the ensuing nine years in an unceasing round of training cruises and exercises, visiting such far-flung ports as Oslo, Havana, Lisbon, and San Francisco, and taking part in large-scale NATO manoeuvres such as "Mainbrace" and "Mariner" in 1952 and 1953.

  Canadian Navy
A planned transfer of two aircraft carriers from the RN, HMCS Warrior and HMCS Magnificent, was slowed, and when Warrior was found to be unsuitable for a North Atlantic winter, she was sent to the west coast and next year was replaced by Magnificent, with the Warrior being given back.
Canada still had two heavy cruisers, HMCS Ontario and HMCS Uganda, a number of Tribal class and other destroyers, and a mass of frigates, corvettes, and other ships, the majority of which were mothballed by 1947.
HMCS Ontario and HMCS Quebec (formerly HMCS Uganda) were scrapped, and Magnificent was paid off, to be replaced by HMCS Bonaventure, a more modern aircraft carrier.

HMS Warrior (R31) was a Colossus-class">Colossus-class aircraft carrier which served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1946 to 1948, the Royal Navy from 1948 to 1958, and the Argentine Navy from 1959 to 1969.

HMCS Magnificent was borrowed from the RN as a replacement for HMCS Warrior, aftr she was deemed unsuitable for operations in the North Atlantic because of her small size.
The larger majestic Class magnificent was built by hartland and Wolff, and was laid down on December 12th 1942.
In 1957 Magnificent was begining to show her age, and in a smart move by the canadian Government, she was given back to the Royal Navy in exchange for the first (and only) carrier ever to be bought by the RCN, HMCS Bonaventure.
