Prior to its sinking, anyone with a C-card was given the opportunity to take a "Diver’s Tour" of the Yukon, inspecting nearly all the compartments from stem to stern, bridge to bilge with the implication that all certified divers are capable of exploring the wreck’s interior.
Unlike most ships with large open holds for cargo, the Yukon was designed to carry a crew—its bulkheads and low decks form a maze of narrow passages and small compartments, some of which are over 50’ from the nearest exit.
The Yukon nearly experienced its first fatality on the day it was opened to the public when an instructor nearly lost his life.

The HMCS Yukon was built by the Burrard Drydock Co. mere metres from where she is docked today.
At a time when the shipbuilding industry was alive and well on the Lower Lonsdale waterfront, the construction of the Yukon represented the Canadian Navy's commitment to anti-submarine warfare as she was one of 20 destroyer-escorts built between 1950 and 1965.
To the hundreds of men and women who served on her during her distinguished 30-year career in the Canadian Navy, the Yukon was a floating home, a steel and aluminum shelter from the raging seas and foreign ports of call.
