The New Zealand vessel, HMNZS Achilles, was the flagship of Rear-Admiral Harwood.
Achilles was hit near the bridge, the splinters killing four men in the gunnery control centre.
Achilles had approached within 11,5 nautical miles and was straddled by the second of two salvos from the German main turret forward, which forced Harwood to fall back behind a curtain of smoke.

HMNZS Achilles was a Leander class cruiser (7200 tons) (from 1936, Improved Leander class), built in Birkenhead, England and launched (as HMS Achilles) on 1 September 1932.
She was transferred to the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy on 31 March 1936 and recommissioned as HMNZS Achilles, with a crew approximately 60% from New Zealand and 40% Imperial.
Achilles took some damage, her captain, W.E. Parry RN being injured, but fortunately only four crew members were killed in the battle, compared to 36 of Graf Spee's crew killed.

The commander of the Ajax saw what was happening and using his superior speed closed in again on the Graf Spree and started a fire on her, in the process she too was hit and had two turrets put out of action.
The pursuit continued until the Ajax reported that she was low on ammunition so Harwood ordered both of the smaller cruisers to resume the role of shadowing the Graf Spree at a distance of about 15 miles away.
The Achilles continued to pursue the Graf Spree and would sometimes close in on the battleship provoking a number of salvoes, non of which hit, the Ajax meanwhile was heading toward the south, just in case the Graf Spree doubled back.

From 13th December, 1939, the flotilla of British warships - HMS Ajax, HMS Exeter and HMNZS Achilles - commanded by Commodore Henry H. Harwood, harried the Graf Spee.
The German battleship outgunned the Allied crew with her six 11-inch guns and eight 5.9inch guns, the British cruisers Achilles, Ajax and Exeter had only six 8-inch (Exeter) and sixteen 6-inch (Achilles and Ajax) guns between them.
The Ajax and Achilles fought on trying to get close enough to give their lightweight guns the chance to damage the battleship, but the Graf Spee was causing damage with her 11-inch guns.

Subject - HMNZS Achilles X Turret - 1945 Configuration There has been considerable discussion about the configuration of the Achilles after the X turret was removed.
I have nothing to add to this but I do have information on the configuration of the X turret after the Achilles was removed.
It was blown to pieces in the Solomons by a 500 lb bomb on Jan 5 1943.
