The Leander class was a class of eight (including modified Australian Leanders) light cruisers built for the Royal Navy prior to World War II.
The Leander class was influenced by the York class heavy cruiser, and was an attempt to better provide for the role of commerce protection.
At the Battle of Kolombagara, Leander was heavily damaged by a Long Lance torpedo, causing many casualties, and sending the ship to repairs for two years.

Leander was launched at Devonport on 24 September 1931, and commissioned on 24 March 1933 into the Royal Navy as the HMS Leander.
Leander was so badly damaged that she took no further part in the war.

HMNZS CANTERBURY was launched by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne (the Princess Royal) on 6 May 1970 and was commissioned into the Royal New Zealand Navy on 22 October 1971, and will be retired from active service early 2005.
HMNZS CANTERBURY is the last of the Leander-class frigates commissioned into service in the Royal New Zealand Navy and her decommissioning in 2005 will mark the end of the steam turbine era.

When war was declared, ACHILLES was proceeding to her war station off South America and LEANDER had recently returned from landing a garrison on Fanning Island to protect the international cable station there.
LEANDER deployed for the Middle East soon after, initially escorting the ships carrying the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
LEANDER experienced a number of air attacks, engaged Vichy French warships on the coast of Syria, conducted various bombardments and escorted convoys past Italian bases in Somalia and Abyssinia.

Bailey of Auckland, Leading Stoker H. Crawford, an Englishman, Stoker E.J. Buckeridge of Waikino and Telegraphist C. Duncan of Tafflape.
Ex Leanders will gather in Auckland on the weekend of the 12 - 13 of July to remember and commemorate the lives that were lost onboard the ship on that fateful day.
Leander reunion - It was an honour and a privilege to be invited to the church service on Sunday March 16th of the Leander Association (South Island branch) at the Age Concern Centre here in Christchurch.

Leander turned wide and caught a torpedo at 0122, suffering severe damage.
Given the number of torpedoes fired by the Japanese, the Allies were fortunate she was the only ship hit during this portion of the battle.
Leander had to go all the way to Boston and was under repair for a year.

HMNZS Canterbury will sail from Lyttelton for the last time on 21 March for Devonport Naval Base where she is to decommision on 31 March after 34 years service with the Royal New Zealand Navy.
Foreign built Leanders are still in service with India (Himgiri, Udaygiri, Dunagiri, Taragiri and Vindhyagiri) although these are beginning to pay off and with Indonesia, six former Dutch Leanders of the Van Speijk class, although it is hard to assess their operational condition.
As for Leander class frigates there are some pictures taken by tha RAN showing a Mk.48 torpedo hits the formar H.M.A.S Yarra i think, after the ship was decommissiond and used as a target.

The Leander and Achilles and three United States destroyers, operating as Task Group 12.2, arrived at Vila, New Hebrides, on 4 May 1942, with a convoy of five ships carrying American troops and the material and supplies for the establishment of a forward base.
Neither the Leander nor the Achilles took part in any of the naval actions about Guadalcanal, but both were actively employed in supply operations during the six months’ campaign.
On 14 September 1942, the Leander, in company with the United States cruisers Minneapolis and Boise and several destroyers, sailed from Espiritu Santo and next day met a convoy of six transports carrying 5000 United States Marines and their equipment and supplies for Guadalcanal.

The Allied forces consist of the light cruisers HMNZS Leander, USS Honolulu (CL-48) and USS St. Louis (CL-49) and ten destroyers; the Japanese force consists of the light cruiser HIJMS Jintsu and five destroyers.
Light cruiser HMNZS LEANDER is also torpedoed and seriously damaged.
Her Executive officer is Commander Stephen W. Roskill RN, who later wrote the official history of the Royal navy in the war, "The War at Sea".

Following a short period as the Commanding Officer of HMNZS TAUPO (a fishery protection patrol craft) he was posted to the Officers' Training School in Auckland, training new entry Officers.
In 1987 he was appointed as the Executive Officer in HMNZS WAIKATO (a gun Leander) for her work-up in Australia and Asian deployment, before taking up the position of Staff Officer Operations in Maritime Headquarters in Auckland.
CMDR McLENNAN joined HMNZS CANTERBURY (a gun Leander) as the Executive Officer in 1990, and after another work-up in Australia deployed to the Mediterranean for the 50 th anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

At Kula Gulf, Helena was torpedoed and sunk, with 1155 survivors, rendering her unable to participate at the Battle of Kolombangara, where St.Louis and Honolulu fought together with HMNZS Leander, and as the two others, suffered torpedo hits.
Six nights later, the force, TF 18, reinforced by DesRon 1.2, moved back up the "Slot" from Tulagi and soon after 0100 on the l3th, engaged an enemy force of one light cruiser, JINTSU, and five destroyers in the Battle of Kolombangara.
In this action there was in fact one Japanese cruiser, the JINTSU, an old (1923) scout cruiser armed with 7-5.5" guns, JINTSU and five destroyers were escorting four destroyer-transports headed for Vila.
