HMS A1 was the Royal Navy 's first British-designed submarine, and their first to suffer fatal casualties.
She was the lead ship of the first British A-class of submarines (a second, much different A-class submarine appeared towards the end of the Second World War), and the only one to have a single bow torpedo tube.
She was accidentally sunk in the Solent on March 18, 1904 whilst carrying out a practice attack on HMS Juno by being struck on the starboard side of the conning tower by a mail steamer, SS Berwick Castle which was en route from Southampton to Hamburg.

They are now working on ways to sort out the A9 cells from neuronal populations to better select cells for transplant.
Michele Tagliati, an associate professor of neurology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, said that while many neurologists have considered cell transplantation to be “on hold,” this study raises the possibility that a better method could renew interest in the technique.

Shortly after the 2nd Submarine Flotilla is disbanded and HMS THUNDERBOLT is sent to the Mediterranean theatre, as is U-557 who sinks her on 15th December.
To keep these tanks a surprise, the column was led 2nd RTR in A9 and A10 cruisers.
In the early hours HMS JERVIS and HMS KIMBERLEY had a short engagement with Vichy French destroyers GUEPARD and VALMY with the latter again using their superior speed to retire after having straddled HMS JERVIS several times.

 THE BLACK ISLE
The two firths are split by the Kessock Bridge which carries the A9 road northwards from Inverness.
The A9 road crosses the Cromarty Firth at the Cromarty Bridge, a flat causeway.
The Firth is particularly remembered for the 400 or so people who were killed on Hogmanay 1915 when an explosion ripped through HMS Natal, a 13,500 ton armoured cruiser sinking her within 5 minutes.

 Battles 1940
The A9 Cruisers went ahead for the Italian square, while the RHA Anti-Tank troop fired at it from the right flank.
In the ensuing battle eight more L-3 Tankettes were destroyed by 11th Hussars and nine by 7th Hussars, with all four field guns being destroyed along with over 100 prisoners being taken, with the battle effectively destroying an entire Infantry battalion and two companies of tanks.
These were, 2nd RTR with Cruiser tanks (mainly A13, but with some A9 and A10s) and 7th RTR with 48 Matilda tanks and the 3rd Hussars which still had MKVI light tanks only.

 Scuba Diving: Submarine A8 : Devon Shipwrecks: Submerged Productions
A4 was sunk at Devonport in 1905 when the wash of a passing ship flooded her ventilators, and the A5 was badly damaged by two petrol explosions also in 1905.
The A7 (see sidebar) was sunk with all hands in Whitsands Bay in 1914, and the A9 foundered just outside Plymouth in1906 after being hit by the steam ship Coath.
Luckily she managed to resurface and no one was hurt, but two years later petrol fumes killed four of her crew.
