Abingdon Sea Cadets are always welcome to recruit anyone who is over 10 years of age.
The new Abingdon Sea Cadet Unit opened in March 1993 at the Old Goal Leisure centre in Abingdon, under the Command of Lt (SCC) Phil Pether RNR.
At this time, the unit was TS Abingdon and did not have any affiliation to a RN ship, until the new type 23 frigates HMS Marlborough came into service and Abingdon Sea Cadets became TS Marlborough.

HMS Ark Royal entered Grand Harbour, Malta, for the last time on 6 November 1978, for a farewell 10-day visit, prior to returning to the UK and decommissioning.
Apart from Ark Royal the group included the Type 42 destroyer HMS Edinburgh, on board which the Duke of York was serving, and the frigate HMS Sirius.

The late medieval history of Radley had many connections both with royalty and with the command of the Royal Navy, the parish church of St.James the Great in Radley holding the name of a Royal Peculiar until the 20th century.
In 1547 the manor of Radley was granted to Thomas Seymour, Lord High Admiral of England, and on his execution for treason in 1549 was given by Edward VI to his sister Princess Elizabeth, who held it until she succeeded to the throne.
At his homecoming to Radley on 15th November 1794 he and Lady Bowyer were escorted by a company wearing blue ribbons and the Abingdon Independent Cavalry to a grand dinner at the Radley Mansion House and then to a ball at the Guildhall in Abingdon.

An ensign of the Tarigo managed to launch 3 torpedoes, sinking the HMS Mohawk before getting her steering gear destroyed and having the deckhouses go up in flames.
Queen Elizabeth and Valiant sunk by Italian frogmen of the Decima Flottiglia MAS at Alexandria.

However, it was a member of the crew of HMS London in April 1949, when the ship was caught up in the infamous ‘Yangtse Incident’ that the author’s memories are at their most vivid.
On 20th April 1949, HMS Amethyst was en route to relieve the guardship when it came under heavy fire from the Communists and went aground.
The following day, HMS London, with the author aboard, was sent up the Yangtse River to help HMS Amethyst, but itself came umder heavy fire, receiving direct hits killing and wounding many of the crew.

I was very fortunate to be given the chance to volunteer for Airborne duties and this is where I finished up, RAF Abingdon.
It was the home of No1 Parachute Training School at that time - 1957- although the Permanent staff (us lot!) were stationed at RNAS HMS Hornbill at Culham for our living quarters, as were all the trainee parachutists who came.
We moved all personnel each day by truck into Abingdon, although I do remember some of the courses having to march all the way as a punishment...

HMS Orwell a torpedo-boat destroyer together with five others was practising how to evade a protective blockade around a battleship, represented by the cruiser HMS Pioneer.
All the ships were sailing without lights but when HMS Orwell was ‘captured’ she lit her navigation lights and was proceeding outside the exercise area to await further instructions.

The attached photograph was taken at Abingdon and I was wondering if you could identify the RAF sergeant instructor - front row, centre.
I was at RAF Abingdon just before you a pity I did'nt get to know you but I recognise a few of the chaps in the photo with the Beverley.
