But, HMS Agamemnon had certain qualities that appealed to him and after a couple of weeks with the ship and it's crew he withdrew his request to the Admiralty for a larger vessel.
Agamemnon had just completed a major refit which included the addition of the new idea of a copper-sheathed hull which made her faster and more agile than other battleships.
The agility of Agamemnon and her well-drilled gunners gave Nelson a fighting chance that he could put his 64 guns against 84 guns but much depended upon his ability to keep Agamemnon clear of the heavy broadside bombardment that "Ça Ira" was still quite capable of firing.

His use of illustrations and visual representations (from maps to the beautiful cover painting by Geoff Hunt) are wonderful, and his appendix on the sailing qualities of Agamemnon based on her trials is absolutely fascinating.
I was most impressed with his history of HMS Agamemnon (my name sake, in case you haven't smoked it yet) as a paradigm for the naval wars of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period.

Lord Nelson Class Battleship - HMS Lord Nelson, HMS Agamemnon
The last British pre-Dreadnought battleships were also the most distinctive - heavy turret based secondary armament, unequal flat sided funnels, built up superstructure and unusual flying bridge.
Like many of the last generation of pre-Dreadnoughts they were completed after HMS Dreadnought, the delay in this case being caused by the diversion of the original min armament to HMS Dreadnought to speed the construction of that ship.
Some of the earlier sketches for the class were of an 'all big gun' variety but these were rejected as too radical and expensive until further experience with a heavy calibre secondary armament had been obtained.
