HMS Agamemnon, a sixty-four gun, third-rate ship-of-the-line-of-battle, was constructed at Buckler's Hard, on the Beulieu river, Hampshire, and launched in 1781.
HMS Agamemnon was one of the most famous ships in the Royal Navy, with battle honours including The Saints, Copenhagen, the Battle of Trafalgar, and the Battle of Santo Domingo.
HMS Agamemnon was the first ship-of-the-line Nelson commanded, and also the first in which he raised his broad pennant as Commodore.

HMS Agamemnon was a Royal Navy third-rate ship of the line with an armament of 64 guns.
She was built at Bucklers Hard on the Beaulieu River in the New Forest, was launched on 10 April 1781, and served until 1809 when she was lost after running aground on a shoal in the mouth of the River Plate.
In December 1781, she was part of a squadron of 12 of the line under Rear-Admiral Kempenfelt that was sent out to intercept a French fleet and convoy expected to sail from Brest for the West Indies.

Designed by the famous naval architect, Sir Thomas Slade, work started on the Agamemnon in May 1777 and, this 64-gun, Third Rate ship of the line with an elmwood keel nearly 132 feet long, was launched in April 1781.
Following an extended search by marine archaeologists, divers have recently discovered the remains of HMS Agamemnon and, although there is nothing of significance left of the timbers, there are many interesting artefacts that will undoubtedly be treasure to archaeologists and naval historians alike.

Agamemnon was detached to the group forming the link between Cadiz, the frigates and the main fleet before the battle, and almost ran into the enemy fleet as they came out of harbour, before being alerted by Captain Blackwood on HMS Euryalus.
In 1809, Agamemnon was wrecked in the River Plate, going heavily aground, so that even when stores were unloaded all attempts to refloat her failed and she had to be abandoned.

However special the Agamemnon was for Nelson, I hardly think a book specially on her was necessary.
His use of illustrations and visual representations (from maps to the beautiful cover painting by Geoff Hunt) are wonderful, and his appendix on the sailing qualities of Agamemnon based on her trials is absolutely fascinating.
I was most impressed with his history of HMS Agamemnon (my name sake, in case you haven't smoked it yet) as a paradigm for the naval wars of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period.

The Agamemnon was one of seven ships built to the same design.
In June 1796 Nelson was transferred to a 74 gun ship, so the Agamemnon returned to England for repairs, returning to service in 1797, when it participated in many battles, including the decisive battle of Trafalgar in 1805, which gave Britain naval supremacy during that century.
She later served in South America until she was wrecked in Maldonado Bay off the coast of Uruguay on the 16 June 1809.

With all of the north excepting New York town in colonial hands, and the south lost after the collapse of Cornwallis at Yorktown in October of 1781, it was apparent to the British forces left in New York -- and politicians in Britain -- that there was no point to further efforts.
Two Royal Navy monitors, used to bombard the Turkish positions - HMS Raglan and HMS M-28 - were sunk, and the remaining British and French ships, which should have been capable of dealing decisively with the attack, reacted too slowly.
He enlisted in the navy at HMCS York as in 1939 after graduating from the U of T. His basic training was conducted in Toronto and, in 1940, Ordinary Seaman Burke was sent overseas for further training with the RN in Cornwall.

The ship shown here was a powerful three decker, launched on the Thames in 1769.
When built she carried ninety guns, but like certain other Second Rates of her class, additional guns were mounted in the early 1780's and it was as a 98 that she fought at both the second Battle of Ushant in 1781 and at the Glorious 1st of June in 1794.

Her history ends with a fire which destroyed the hotel.
Another ship history that I have read is Nelson's Favorite HMS Agamemnon at War 1781-1809.
I found the tale of the Agamemnon heavy going and not nearly as informative as the story of the Macedonian.
